Prince Antonio, Princess Christine and Family

Will his death be publicly commemorated by the Brazilian authorities, akin to the death of his brother Dom Luiz Gastão (then head of the family) two years ago which was marked with one day of official mourning?

I am not sure. Two years ago, Brazil had a right-wing president (Bolsonaro) who had good relations with the imperial family. Now Brazil has a leftist president (Lula) who is not sympathetic to the monarchists.

By the way, none of the major national Brazilian newspapers has reported the passing of Dom Antônio yet on their websites (at least not on the front pages).

Folha de S. Paulo

O Globo

Sad news indeed, this weeks communication already indicated that there was little hope.

So, the wake starts today at 4 pm, a mass will take place tomorrow at 10 am and the funeral (interment in the imperial mausoleum) will take place tomorrow at 5 pm. In addition, the family will officially be in mourning for 14 days; of which the last 5 days are 'light mourning' in which they may participate in select events that don't have a festive character.

After his father's death, prince Rafael is now referred to as the 'Imperial Prince' and his mother as the 'Dowager Imperial Princess'.

Prince Raphael was not born to be Imperial Prince and second in the line. His eldest brother died in a airplace Crash and his Father from a long Ilness.
Why is Princess Christine Dowager Imperial Highness as Dom Bertrand and her Son are unmarried ?

On that Airfrance 447 crash...

As princess Christine is the widow of the previous 'Prince Imperial' (the title used for the heir), she is now the 'Dowager Princess Imperial'. Her son is the new 'Prince Imperial' - if he marries with consent his wife would become the 'Princess Imperial' - just like Christine became the Princess Imperial when her husband became the new heir after his brother's death. Bertrand is the head of the house and doesn't use the title for the heir but is considered 'emperor de jure' and also is referred to as 'Chefe da Casa Imperial do Brasil'.

I assume both Christine, Rafael and Maria Gabriella have the (defunct) style of 'Imperial Highnesses' as prince(sse)s of the Imperial House of Brazil.

Images from today. Christine and her children are completely broken, and so is Princess Eleanora.

Prince Bertrand looks so frail. :(

The Brazilian Navy pays tribute at the funeral mass of Prince Antonio de Orleans and Bragança.

Mr Spearman, husband of Pss Amelia seems not to be there?

The Prince de Ligne seems also not to be there. I believe they were there but no pictures.

I was also surprised not to see him - he probably stayed behind with their children? I wonder whether the very quick funeral (one day after his death) might have something to do with it. It seems Antonio's children and some (but not all) of his siblings travelled to Rio de Janeiro to be at his bedside but other family members probably couldn't come (from Europe or other places in Brazil) at such a short notice.

I believe that a quick funeral and burial is the norm in Brazilian culture.

As expected, from what I understand, Brazil's current leftist government did not decree any official day of mourning to mark the Prince's passing. Apart from short reports by a few newspapers, mostly in Rio (a city with strong monarchical ties as the former capital of the Empire), it looks like the funeral went largely unnoticed by the Brazilian media. It is pretty sad.

Perhaps he and the children are staying back in Europe (where the seems to live) I(t was reported earlier these week that Antonio's children were rushing from Europe to see him, so it guess there was no time left to organize something for the children

Does Dom Rafael automatically become the Prince Imperial as his uncle's heir or does he wait until his uncle creates him Prince Imperial?

I believe he automatically becomes the Prince Imperial.
It’ll be interesting to see in years to come whether he makes a match that meets the criteria to stay in the line of succession.

Based on the communication by the imperial family, he automatically became the prince imperial upon his father’s death.

If he wants to stay Prince Imperial has he to marry a Royal ?
I imagine he does. But in a few years from now he will probably make the rules himself and will be able to alter them as he sees fit and if he feels that it necessary.
