Today is the anniversary of the Queen's proclamation as Queen and I thought that it would be nice to start an On this Day thread for the family where TRF members could mark important dates in the British Royal Family as their anniversaries appear.

Feb. 8, 1952 - A New Queen is proclaimed

So I'll start with today's important event:

On Feb 8, 1952 exactly 56 years ago from today, a new queen was proclaimed.

The BBC has a really nice write up of the Queen's ascension here:

BBC ON THIS DAY | 8 | 1952: New Queen proclaimed for UK

The Queen opened her speech,

"By the sudden death of my dear father I am called to assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty."

Feb. 24, 1981 - The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer announce their engagement

On Feb. 24, 1981 the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer announced that they were to wed.

Here is the BBC write up of the event and a videoclip of the engagement couple.

wow, I have not seen that interview for a really long time, it is so weird to watch something like that knowing what was going through her head, and what was to happen. Watching It again I can see how Diana became so popular so fast, what a sweet girl standing there giggling:)

July 26, 1958

In 1958, Prince Charles, age 9, was made the Prince of Wales by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

On November 4, 1677 Prince William of Orange (King William III) and Princess Mary (Queen Mary II) were married in London, England.

:previous: they married on his birthday, and what would have been his mothers birthday had she not died years before:flowers:

It is also the anniversary of when Catherine of Aragon first met prince Arthur

On this day,August 19th,1561 – Mary, Queen of Scots returned to Scotland arriving in Leith to begin her personal rule.

On this day August 24th

Birth of Alexander II of Scotland in 1198,the son of William the Lion and Ermengarde of Beaumont.

:previous: The Princess' name seemed familiar. The article was perfect because it declared: She (Cecily) was named after her paternal grandmother, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York.

Yes the Princess was named after her fathers mother Cecily Neville, Duchess of York.

Along the lines of the War of the Roses, today marks the death of Margaret of Anjou, the last Lancaster queen consort.

After the defeat of their final forces and death of her son, Margaret spent time in the custody of her former lady in waiting, the Duchess of Suffolk. She was later ransomed by her cousin King Louis XI and spent her remaining years in France. She died and was buried with her parents in Anjou.

It is also the 77th anniversary of the death of Prince George, Duke of Kent, the father of the current Duke, Prince Michael and Princess Alexandra.

Prince George who died in an airplane crash when Michael was only seven weeks old, was the first member of the BRF to die in active duty in 450 years.

He was the second child of George V to die, the first of course being John who died at 14. The queen's father would be next a decade later.

August 26th,1819 :Birth of His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the future husband of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort from 1857 at Schloss Rosenau, Coburg in Germany.

Prince Albert (L) with his elder brother Prince Ernest and mother Princess Louise.

:previous: What is interesting about Prince Albert is the fact that his first name was not Albert. It was Francis (Franz). Nor did Queen Victoria and Albert ever use Francis in any of the names of their sons.

Franz Albrecht (Augustus Charles Emmanuel). Besides Charles/Karl, he was named for his godfathers. Albrecht was not a middle name, it was his legal first name. Not uncommon for double barrel names in the German houses, nor to go by one or the other. Even when young he went by Albrecht.

Along the lines of Victoria who was christened Alexandrina Victoria.

Neither he nor Victoria used their technical first name for any of their kids.

Among their grandchildren Franz and Alexandra were used. Vicky's son Sigismund was Franz Friedrich (went by his third). He even had a granddaughter named for him. Helena's daughter commonly known as Marie Louise, her first name was Franziska. It was quite common among their grandchildren not to go by their first given name (often not even second). Alexandra/er was more common.

Ah yes, "Her Highness Princess Franziska Josepha Louise Augusta Marie Christina Helena." How on earth did they manage to re-arrange her name to Marie Louise? Her godfather was Emperor Franz Joseph and she was named after him but always called Louie by the family.

It appears he was named Albert rather than Albrecht in German as well as in English. https://www.heraldica.org/topics/royalty/HGSachsen-CG.htm#SCG-Hausgesetz

Louie or Louise?

On this day August 28th,1972 Prince William of Gloucester was killed in an air crash whilst competing at the Goodyear International Air Trophy at Halfpenny Green.

Oh wow as far back as 1972. A goodlooking dashing young man. A young Prince Charles apparently idolised Prince William. Very sad tragic death for Princess Alice and Prince Henry and brother Richard. I saw an interesting documentary about him awhile back.

She liked the name Marie Louise after Napoleon's empress.. she was usualy called Louie..

Is it correct to conclude that Princess Franziska was the person who selected Marie Louise to be called?

It's my understanding her father chose the name. He met the Empress Marie Louise as a boy and developed a crush on her.

Do you know why she was called Louise Augusta and then changed to Marie Louise?

The following statement was published in several newspapers I searched in the Findmypast British newspaper database:

"The Lord Chamberlain is authorized to announce that in order to prevent the confusion which has often arisen between her Royal Highness Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, and her Highness Princess Louise Augusta of Schleswig-Holstein, owing to both bearing the same Christian name, the Princess Louise Augusta will for the future be known as her Highness Princess Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein."

-The [London] Standard, December 7, 1908, p. 7, col. 5

Considering her nickname was Louie, a play off Louise, it makes sense she was actually referred to as Louise Augusta prior to that declaration. Not to mention that Louise Augusta are paired in her name, not needing the re-arranging Marie Louise requires.

Part of me wonders why the announcement was made at the time. Marie Louise had returned to England in 1900 and been performing duties. I'd think if it caused enough confusion for such a statement, it would have happened earlier.

August 29 in 1298 Eleanor of England, Countess of Bar, the eldest living daughter of Edward the Longshanks, died in Ghent.

Eleanor was meant to marry Alfonso III of Aragon but due to problems with the Pope and his parents over Sicily, Edward kept delaying any engagement. They were engaged but Alfonso died before they met. She later married Henry III, Count of Bar.

Eleanor's burial at Westminster Abbey has never been discovered ,the date of her burial at the Abbey on October 12th,1298 was recorded but not the location.
