IMO the issue has been handled poorly. If it was a joint decision in anyway between Nicholas and King Michael then they should have let Nicholas announce it as his 'decision'. Instead they have made it seem all very cold and uncaring, that Nicholas has disappointed his grandfather and in some way 'failed' and is being punished (even if they say he's not it LOOKS that way)
I think this will do lasting damage to the RF as the more the family play around with the succession the more it weakens the idea of the succession itself. Its as if they've said "well we gave Nicholas a try, who next..." just working through the remaining members of the family.
