Kingdom of Tonga

King Tupou and the royal family has returned to the Royal Palace after it seems no longer any danger after the volcano erupted, causing Tsunami warning and major flooding in the country.

This is not confirmed. Reports have emerged from the daughter of the commander of HM Armed forces who was with HM the King on the island of ‘Eua.

There are now doubts on the authenticity of the original report which was posted by the Fiji times. Given the complete shutdown of communication and internet to the kingdom, any information from in the ground is patchy at best. The fact they refer to it as the castle and said the royal family indicates a lack understanding.

Also, the King and Queen don't live in the palace in Nuku'alofa. They never moved in when King Tupou ascended the throne and remained at their residence near Kolovai. That part of Tongatapu appears to have been badly hit by the Tsunami and the royal residenece is right on the sea front so has probably been damaged.

Agreed. The Hon. Frederica Filipe, niece to their Majesties the King and Queen of Tonga just posted on Facebook what happened. It was HM the Queen and her parents HRH Princess Pilolevu and Lord Tuita who were evacuated to the royal Villa on the hill.

Her account of people sheltering on the grounds of the Royal Villa (built by his late Majesty King George V) was humbling. Including a revelation from her mother of the reason behind the design and layout of the Villa was to be a refuge in such a circumstance. The accounting of elderly and children being granted refuge inside the royal residence is heart warming As was the story of HM the Queen supervising the distribution of water to the people sheltering there.

Princess Mele Siuʻilikutapu of Tonga has passed away yesterday aged 75.

Thank you for sharing this. I admit to knowing nothing about Tongan politics, so I wonder if the princess being the first woman to be elected as a member of the legislative assembly in 1975 was something motivated by her own aspirations or a stage-managed way of introducing women into parliament (if, for example, having a relatively high-ranked royal break the glass ceiling would have been seen as less controversial than if she were an ordinary woman).
