Victoria participated yesterday in the celebration of Gothenburg's 400th anniversary. The Royal Court published at its Facebook photos from Bernadotte Library's files, king Gustaf V visiting the 300th anniversary and the Anniversary Exhibition in Gothenburg. Even then anniversary of the city was also moved forward and took place in 1923.

King Carl XVI Gustaf later said that he had been in the lap of someone, who had been in the lap of Napoleon's first fiancée.
(Gustaf V's great-grandmother Désirée had indeed been engaged to Napoleon.)
That makes you feel how far back the Bernadotte dynasty goes...

I think either the blackmail or some of Haijby's subsequent treatment or the strong evidence Gustav seems to have propositioned a lot of men, including people in the government, still might not go over great. Although today a king might have more sense than to hit on the prime minister, back then he still had actual power.

From all I’ve read I believe Viktoria had poor health for much of her life, including weak lungs, which the winters in Scandinavia didn’t help. As a result she spent months each year at her mansion on Capri. She probably died of a lung condition as a result of pneumonia as many elderly people do.

I never realized that Desiree had lived long enough to meet her great-great-grandson, but she did. Wow!
