His Majesty the King has approved the Royal Ceremonial Emblem to commemorate his 80th birthday next December.

The emblem was launched yesterday by the Fine Arts Department. The royal symbol was selected by the King from 12 styles designed by five artists of the department. His Majesty approved the 12th, designed by Sumet Putpuang.

Sumet said the composition of the emblem depicted the Royal Cipher of His Majesty placed on the Noble Throne and surmounted by the Great Crown of Victory. The backrest of the Great Crown shows the three-tiered umbrellas of kingship.[The Great White Umbrellas of the State: the center Nine-tiers is the crucial one to represent the Kingship and the conposition of 2 seven-tiers on both side] The emblem is decorated with 80 diamonds, signifying the King's age. Queen: Speak up against killings

space.gif

Her Majesty the Queen yesterday urged the entire Kingdom to condemn the violence and brutality in the restive south and act against it.

"We cannot sit still anymore. It is not right [to allow the violence]. We should condemn it to show our dissatisfaction at such actions,"

"I think Thai people all over the country should express their views and opinions that it is absolutely wrong to kill other people, notably the elderly and women who cannot protect themselves,"

"We should do something, like the gathering of people with me today. We should express our views via radio, television or letters to tell the militants to stop, otherwise they could turn our country into an uncivilised society in which they can kill anybody, anytime," she said. "We have to stop the violence now, it's enough,"

"I know there are many bad people everywhere but it is our duty not to allow them to do such bad things. They can kill people and officials cannot bring them down? That's not the right thing and not honourable for our nation,"

HM the Queen urged people, especially in Bangkok, to take action against the violence. It was Her Majesty's first plea this year amid no signs of an end to the violence.

His Majesty the King
has granted permission for drought-stricken Tanzania to use his patented rain-making technique, Agriculture Minister Theera Sutabutr said Wednesday.

The Agriculture Ministry will dispatch its officials to demonstrate the technique and transfer technology to Tanzanian officials, the minister said.

The east-African nation asked Thailand for help and the Royal Household Bureau informed the ministry His Majesty had granted permission for the technology transfer, he said.

His Majesty has advised the ministry to map the country and build a database of wind patterns, Thira said.

Experts will travel to Tanzania this month armed with geographical information provided by its government.

There they will train Tanzanian officials to make artificial rain.

Other countries have expressed interest in using His Majesty's techniques.

His Majesty was granted a patent for his "super-sandwich" rainmaking" technique which uses aircraft to "seed" with chemicals warm and cold clouds at different altitudes. It is unique because it creates rain in specific areas.

Thai King Donates Pavilion to East-West Center

HONOLULU (KHNL) - A public reception on Sunday, March 11, will celebrate the opening of the East-West Center (EWC) Gallery's latest exhibition "Sala: Gem of Thai Architecture" that will run from March 8 through May 23, and the new Thai pavilion donated by Thailand's king, His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej. The ornately decorated and colorful teak wood sala replaces an earlier one gifted to the EWC by the Thai Royal Family in 1967, at the time the only Royal pavilion erected outside Thailand. The program gets underway at 1:30 p.m. at the sala and will be followed by a 2 p.m. reception in the Gallery.

Detial of Royal Pavillion at EWC

Construction of a traditional Thai sala (pavilion), donated to the East-West Center (EWC) by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, is nearing completion. The new sala is replacing an older one bestowed on the Center by His Majesty in 1967, the first Royal sala to be constructed outside Thailand.

The sala is located mauka of the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center at Jefferson Hall on the EWC campus.

William Feltz, coordinator of the EWC’s Arts Program, says “Over the years, the original sala began to show signs of normal wear and tear. Instead of attempting to repair it, the Thai Government’s Fine Arts Ministry and His Majesty decided to present the Center with a new, more elaborate, sala. We are extremely pleased to have this beautiful new structure.”
The new sala was designed by Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri, a professor at Bangkok’s prestigious Chulalongkorn University, a Fellow of the Royal Institute, and the foremost designer of traditional structures in Thailand. First assembled in Bangkok, and made of teak and native rosewood, the new sala was taken apart piece-by-piece and shipped to the EWC in Honolulu. A team of six Thai artisans and a Thai engineer, accompanied by Dr. Pinyo, traveled to Hawaii to oversee the dismantling of the old sala and construction of the new one. The colorful pavilion, featuring ornately carved designs, sweeping rooftop cho fa, mirrors, and His Majesty’s seal, will be officially dedicated early next year on the occasion of the visit to Hawaii of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The East-West Center contributes to a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community by serving as a vigorous hub for cooperative research, education and dialogue on critical issues of common concern to the Asia Pacific region and the United States.

Queen resting after surgery on her hand

Her Majesty the Queen had an operation on her left hand at Phra Mongkutklao hospital yesterday to treat a locked middle finger, a statement from the Royal Household Bureau said. His Majesty the King visited her at the hospital after the operation.

Her Majesty has been advised to rest for two weeks.

The Queen has experienced occasional stiffness in the middle finger of her left hand, a condition known as lock finger.

Her condition improved considerably after she had physical therapy and took medication.

But the finger became stiff again, causing difficulty in her activities.

Orthopaedic surgeons agreed the Queen needed an operation to loosen fibrotic tissue around the finger tendons.

Lock finger is caused by a disorder in the sheath covering tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm with the bones of the fingers.

Daily activities such as carrying heavy objects can cause the sheath to expand and this blocks the movement of the tendons.

Bangkok Post : General news

Accompanied by her daughters and granddaughters, HM the Queen arrived at the hospital at around 5pm yesterday

Shortly before 6pm, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej also arrived at the hospital to visit his queen and take her back to the palace.
