King Albert II & Queen Paola of Belgium 1959

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Why was the men seperate from the women. Was that the bishop idea to seperate the sexes .

The picture of Paola with her hands over her face crying and Albert's concerned look is touching.

I was curious about this wedding and so looked. It seems to me that Paolo achieved the opposite of most women. I find the plainest of women become beautiful on their wedding days, but Paolo, perhaps the most beautiful of all Princesses in her day, somehow appeared plain. I cannot put my fiunger on it, but it's strange, she does - IMHO of course!

Well, I do think she looked rather pretty in this picture, as she probably did in all close-ups of her face (which are not that many in this thread). But the dress did not do much for her indeed, though the veil is absolutely stunning. And maybe that the pictures are mostly in black and white influences the impression she makes too.

Wow, as always you were able to show some amazing and 'new' pictures Steven, thanks! The last picture almost looks like a composition of a painting.

She looked like a child!!

Wow they are beautiful pictures of the wedding. Paolo does look very young. :)

Well, she was only 21 years old when she married...

Albert was 25, turned 2 months before; Paola was 21, less then two months later she turned 22. She was a really young and beautiful bride.

The day of his wedding Prince Albert , Prince de Liège, wore the collar of the order of Malta such as his father ex-King Leopold III.
We have a high national order , the order of Leopold , which doesn't have any collar only a sash.
King Baudouin wore on his wedding day the spanish Charles (III ?) collar.
(The same one President Sarkozy wore on the State visit of France to Spain)

An interesting and very diplomatic act...

:previous:Thanks for posting the pictures, stephanievl! Although I've seen the lovely first one several times before, either I didn't notice that big "royal Belgian" lion next to Paola or those other versions of the photo didn't include it. Anyway, the young bride seems to present the proud animal with a gracious smile;)...

Paola's beautiful lace veil is an ancient family piece. It was first worn by her grandmother, Laura Mosselman du Chenoy, a Belgian (!) aristocrat. After Paola, it was also used by Astrid, Mathilde and Claire on their wedding day.

I can't really see it from the pictures - but was Paola wearing a tiara?
I was wondering - Fabiola was wearing the 9 provinces - but she became Queen that day.
Paola?
Astrid - no tiara at all.
Mathilde - yes, the Art Deco tiara.
Claire - yes, her own.

So - in case Paola also wore a tiara on her wedding day (after all she was a born princess) - why did Astrid not do it?

Im not so fond of her dress. The bow does not do it justice.Though the veil was beautiful.

Paola and Albert were a beautiful couple!
