Jack Brooksbank: Family and Background

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
So his "real" given name is John Christopher Stamp, and he is just called Jack by his family? (Like President Kennedy).

No, his real name is Jack. But the article states he was named after his great-grandfather whose real name was John but was nicknamed Jack.

Small correction, 1694, he died in 1756. He was the three times great grandfather of the 1st baron, who in return was Jack's great-grandfather. Mary likely named her son Stamp because he was his grandfather's (Richard Stamp) heir. Richard's brother was Lord mayor of London. It wasn't that uncommon to use a maiden name as a given name for your child, though more commonly as a middle name.

Actually Jack's great-grandfather was created a baronet not a baron. A baronet is a commoner, not a peer. Kind of like a hereditary knighthood.

Mrs. Newton is the grandmother who spoke to the press.

Apparently it was too early in the morning for me. :bang:

Oh, how lovely!
Maybe Jack inspired Thomas to pop the question?:flowers:

Tom Brooksbank

Wonder if the Brooksbank brothers will serve as Best Man for one another, as William and Harry did?

It's lovely when brothers do that duty for each other and I hope it happens in this case.

I believe Jack and Sarah are third cousins if I am not mistaken. Eugenie would be his third cousin once removed then.

Jack and Sarah's mother are third cousins, which makes Jack and Eugenie third cousins twice removed.

Their closest ancestor was Thomas William Coke, 2nd Earl of Leicester of Holkham who died in 1909.

Was Jack perhaps born in 1986 rather than 1996?

Wow, that's quite an age gap between Lady Julia Coke and her brother Hon. John Spencer Coke (most likely by different mothers as Thomas was about 22 when Julia was born and about 58 when John was born). Julia's son Mervyn was born when she was about 36 - in the same year as her younger brother.

In Jack's line two of the remaining three births are at about the age of 40, so that adds up; resulting in 'covering' another generation in Eugenie's family tree that varies between early/mid-20s to early/mid-thirties.

Yes, the 2nd Earl of Leicester had two wives and 18 children.

#1 Juliana Whitbread (d. 1870), mother of 11 children including Julia Lady Powerscourt (the eldest)
#2 Hon. Georgiana Caroline Cavendish, mother of seven children including John (her fourth child and her husband's fifteenth)

Thanks for clarifying that - I spotted the big age gap as well and wondered if there was a second wife.

Okay, I just really paid attention to this! I am from Maryland, I had no idea Jack was descended from the Calvert family. How totally exciting.:flowers: Back in the day, the Calvert owned a lot of land in Maryland, some of which became the University of Maryland at College Park...my alma mater.

Okay..I am back...now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for this tidbit!

I had no idea that Eugenie's husband is descended from the Earls Harewood.

Fascinating.?

So he is a distant relative of the Lascelles branch of the Royal family?

So he is a distant relative of the Lascelles branch of the Royal family?
Yes but Eugenie herself is more closely related. Princess Mary's husband was the 6th Earl of Harewood.

Jack is the 8th generation counting from the 1st Earl. Eugenie is the 7th generation counting from the 2nd earl (his younger sister is a 'great(*X)grandmother of Jack); while princess Mary's husband (himself the 6th earl) was the 4th generation counting from the 2nd earl. So, if I am counting correctly, Eugenie is a third cousin trice removed of the 6th Earl of Harewood; and Jack is a 4th cousin trice removed. Moreover, Jack and Eugenie are 7th cousins themselves.

Edit: Just read on Jack's Wikipedia-page that they have a closer family relationship (but still distant relatives):
A half-third cousin twice-removed of Princess Eugenie through Thomas Coke, 2nd Earl of Leicester,Brooksbank's great-grandfather was Sir Jack Coke, a Gentleman Usher to King George VI and Extra Gentleman Usher to Queen Elizabeth II and his great-uncle was the 3rd Baron Hamilton of Dalzell.

Wouldn't the relations to the Lascelles mean that Eugenie and Jack are very distant cousins?

First grandchild for George and Nicola Brooksbank!:flowers:

I didn't know his sister in law was pregnant. Congratulations to the new parents and both their families :flowers:

Such happy news, welcome after the illness of both of their parents and their father's hospitalization.

Shares his middle name Stamp with his Uncle Jack (name of Jack and Thomas' paternal grandfather).

Stamp is unusual; I wonder if it's his mother's maiden name or another family surname. Congrats to them.
