Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko took a stroll on a beach near the Hayama Imperial Villa in the town of Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, on February 5, 2014. They stay in Hayama for a break until February 9.

Saudi Crown Prince meets with Japanese emperor

Saudi Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud held talks Wednesday with Japan’s emperor on the second day of the Saudi official’s state visit to Tokyo.

Emperor Akihito welcomed Prince Salman at the Tokyo Imperial Palace where also he hosted a luncheon in honor of the Saudi leader and the accompanying delegation.

During talks, Prince Salman expressed King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz’s appreciation for Emperor Akihito.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited Izu Oshima Island, south of Tokyo, on February 28, 2014. The volcanic island was hit hard by mudslides triggered by a powerful typhoon in October 2013.

Today, April 23, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko attended the annual Japan Prize in Tokyo. The prize is awarded to scientists from around the world for their contributions to the advancement of science and technology.

Every time I see pictures of the Empress, she always looks so very sad. It's like her spirit has been broken and she just follows along doing what has to be done......what a very sad life she must lead regardless of title or money.

In late May the Emperor and Empress were at Oyama Station. A high school girl took a photo and posted it on Twitter. It caused a ripple of discussion about the Imperial Family and the media, and the appropriateness of posting private photos online. I like the theory that the negative reaction from some quarters was just sour grapes, because their photographer's failed to get a picture half as good as the young lady and her phone.
