I had always liked the French Idea of a nation. That a nation is not a nation because of its race and blood but more by the a unity in culture and laungage. That was one of the main differences it had with Germany in the early 20th Century. Germany though race is what made a nation. I know that multiculturism is such a big part of america but I had no idea people were so terrified of it in europe. I remember learning in history lessons on how the europeans would ridicule us for having race problems in the 50's and they praised themselves for not having those problems. That was becaust the nations were still homogenous and I guess it is only know that multiculturism is taking root and I guess they will have to go through some trouble like we did before an equilibrium is reached. I just though europe was way ahead of us when it comes to acceptance and tolerance.
