Husker du hans vilde udtalelser? Afdøde Prins Richard kritiserede prinsesse Benedikte i fuld offentlighed | BT Royale - www.bt.dk
Back to the BT article I wrote about earlier.
As you know there have often been eyebrow-raisers among the interviews we've had from the Berleburgs over the years.
While Prince Richard no doubt had many good qualities he doesn't strike me as a person, who was that easy to get along with!
BT has compiled some of the things he said, which may be indicative of his and Benedikte's marriage. But then again their marriage should not be compared to a modern marriage, but rather to land-gentry of the first half of the 1900's.
Back in 1990 he said about then Bundes Kansler Helmut Kohl: "Kohl as is ass (as in donkey). He's silent about what it will all entail". (About the unification). - From a person who was married to a high ranking member of the DRF, that was of course noted.
But also his dry and somewhat harsh sense of humor is well known.
In connection with his and Benedikte's silver anniversary he said about their first meeting (in 1966): "My later wife's enthusiasm was far greater than mine. But it's after all men who ask the wifes for a dance - that's at least how it was back then (I'm actually not quite sure what he means) - and since then I couldn't get rid of her. It was incredibly troublesome".
Even though they were married for 49 years, they must have had their ups and downs. back in 2004 when Prince Richard was getting back on his feet after a lengthy cancer treatment he said: "Benedikte is not fond of illness and ill people. She's not sweet to me... Benedikte and I are like night and day. Sometimes I wonder that we've had children".
At the same time he praised Prince Gustav: "The support from my son Gustav kept me alive. He drove me around, dressed me. It's totally fatastic what my son has been to me".
As for the DRF he added: "Henrik was actually the only one who called med and showed concern for me in my misery. That surprised me a lot".
The DRF expert Jon Bloch Skipper comments: "Prince Richars and Benedikte did sit on each others lap all day long, (I.e. they weren't that much together) but it's my impression that they were genuinely fond of each other. You can to some extent compare then to the Queen and Prince Consort, who individually are also independent people.
Prince Richard was in every context a loose canon. The entire communications department have several times torn themselves in the hair over him, but that was also what gave him a certain charm. I've met him several times and he really could say some funny things". (As in amusing).
But considering the position of his wife, wasn't he aware of the implications of what he said? Presumably he know what weight his words carried?
Jon Bloch Skipper: "I think exactly that could be Prince Richard's problem. I doesn't seem like he amassed that much experience in that field.
Prince Richard was always a little bit in opposition. He did not chose Benedikte because of the life as royal, but despite of that. He was a free-thinking and acting individual with a lot of good humors, but also a good deal of sarcasm".
Prince Richard was holder of the Order of the Elephant - which will now quietly be returned.
- That Prince Richard was... interesting... to be around can be seen from some of the interviews he and other family members gave over the years. Some of which can be found here on TRF.
