On August 8th, CP Naruhito attended the 18th crystal growth international conference opening ceremony at the Nagoya Congress Center. The event is the only international conference to discuss crystal growth technology usage, such as semiconductors, and it was held in Japan for the first time in 15 years. The Crown Prince gave a speech in English and listened to a special keynote lecture by Professor Isamu Akasaki, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014.

In the afternoon, he visited Atsuta Shrine and then arrived at Nagoya Station around 3:15pm, immediately after Emperor Akihito's speech, to return to Tokyo.

CP Naruhito's August 7-8th Aichi Prefecture agenda (...)

It is just in the agenda what the Crown Prince will do at that day and people are flocking near the venues to see a glimpse from the royal. This happens in other monarchies too. To me this just looks like people walking on the street and suddenly and seeing a whole motorcade coming, so all the smartphones went out to film it. Apart from that enthusiast group, the rest of the street seem totally unaware of a VIP passing the street.

Yes, I expected crowds near the train stations and venues. However, Kariya was a little surprising to me because it's between Nagoya and Anjo. From Facebook posts, there were definitely local or IHA staff ahead gathering crowds and handing out flags at various locations along the route.

One fan noted Atsuta Shrine is the traditional repository for the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, which are only seen by the Emperor and certain priests at enthronement ceremonies.

Anyway, more news clips of CP Naruhito's Aichi Prefecture visit and return to Tokyo.

Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito an unlikely critic of the monarchy - The Straits Times
Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito may be heir to one of the world's oldest monarchies, but he is not shy about knocking the institution he represents or his country's warring past.

The 56-year-old has levelled subtle yet unprecedented criticism at the monarchy, blaming the rigid lifestyle imposed on royals for a decade of stress-related illness suffered by his wife, who was once a high-flying diplomat.

And, like his popular father Akihito, the heir apparent has warned that Japan must not downplay its early 20th-century militarism and actions in World War II - remarks seen as a rebuke to the nationalist stance of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

I wonder if CP Naruhito will visit Denmark since the Danish CP couple already visited in 2015.

IHA will send CP Naruhito to open the 8th Asian Winter Games in Hokkaido Prefecture on February 19th on behalf of the Emperor. A 3-day visit, February 18-20, is being planned. CP Masako's attendance at either the opening or closing ceremony (Feb. 26) will be determined later.

Originally, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were to attend the opening ceremony as requested by the Games organizers, but the IHA reconsidered sending the elderly couple during the coldest season. Previously, CP Naruhito opened the 5th Asian Winter Games on behalf of the Emperor in 2003 when His Majesty was being treated for prostate cancer.

Another health consideration for the change is the Vietnam trip for Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko is also scheduled for February.
