Landmark visit by Japanese crown prince
Great business and symbolic significance will be attached to the visit of Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito, the heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne, when he arrives in Cambodia next Thursday, June 27. This is the first such visit to Cambodia for the heir apparent to the oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world and probably the first visit by a member of Japan’s royal family.

Dr Hajime Fujiwara, a geologist, former Texas oil man and author of 50 books, told me about Crown Prince Naruhito’s visit. He says Crown Prince Naruhito is very interested in water resources and the environment, not only for Japan, but for the whole world. Fujiwara says the Japanese people were touched by outpourings of support from the Cambodian people following the the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, which caused the horrific Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the effects of which will be with us for generations.[...]

These gestures from Cambodia, traditionally the recipient of aid from Japan, resonated with the Japanese people. The Cambodian people told the Japanese people to please use the aid money Cambodia would have gotten for their own people who were suffering as a result of the disaster. The magnificence of this gesture is why Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito is coming next week. [...]

Japan reopened its embassy in Phnom Penh in 1992. Through entities like JICA, the Asian Development Bank, other development organisations and private companies, Japan has been steadily involved in Cambodia’s reconstruction.

Japan provides funding for the Khmer Rouge trials, restoration works at Bayon Temple and many other projects helpful to Cambodians.
Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito makes first visit to Thailand
Visiting for three days, upon his arrival Crown Prince Naruhito will be taken to Government House, where he will be officially welcomed by Ms. Yingluck, who actually first met him last month, as part of her first official visit to Japan. Quite possibly the highlight of his stay, Naruhito will get to visit the Chakri Mahaprasart Throne Hall, where he will get the chance to meet Thailand’s King and Queen on Monday night. Japanese Ambassador Kojima commented that, in part, the visit is to celebrate the lasting diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand, which as of 2012 have lasted for 126 years.
Japan's crown prince to visit Thailand

Crown prince to visit Monday
On Tuesday, Crown Prince Naruhito will visit Ayutthaya, then enjoy lunch on a boat cruise back to Bangkok hosted by Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi. Mr Kojima said the Chao Phraya cruise would be of interest to the crown prince who serves as the honorary president of the United Nations Secretary-General's advisory board on water and sanitation.

"Japan's history mainly involves its struggle against natural disasters including tsunamis, earthquakes and floods. Minister Plodprasop will explain how last year's flood took place, how it affected the country and what counter measures are being implemented," the envoy said.

The 53-year-old crown prince first visited Thailand 32 years ago and made two transit stops in Bangkok in 1987 and 1994. This will be his fourth time in Thailand, but the first official one.

His father Emperor Akihito visited Thailand when he was the crown prince in 1964 and again in 1994 as emperor. The emperor's last visit to Thailand was to attend the 60th anniversary of the ascension of King Bhumibol to the throne in June 2006.

"The dynasties have very close relations and this visit, which includes meetings with Prime Minister Yingluck [Shinawatra] and key cabinet members will enhance the good cooperation between the two countries," he said.

He said the crown prince will also express his gratitude to Thais for contributing to humanitarian assistance to Japan during the tsunami last year.

Japanese Crown Prince to visit Thailand's ancient city
During his three-day official visit, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan will make a royal visit to Ayutthaya province, Thailand's former capital and historical city in central region. The Crown Prince is scheduled to visit the Ayutthaya Historical Study Center and the Japanese village in the province.

The Ayutthaya Historical Study Center was established in 1986 under the cooperation between Thai and Japanese scholars. The province has been chosen as the site of the center because it had served as a former capital of Thailand for 417 years and provided the foundation of modern Thai culture.
Researcher keeps watch on Angkor Wat for half a century
For half a century, Yoshiaki Ishizawa, a former president of Sophia University, has studied and worked to preserve the World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Ishizawa, 74, is now preparing to guide Crown Prince Naruhito when he visits the complex on Thursday.

Many of Ishizawa's Cambodian colleagues were lost in the massacres perpetrated by the Pol Pot regime and the nation's civil war. He has also seen the temples deteriorate, but he continues to offer assistance, saying, "I want Cambodians to preserve these great ruins."

"I want to tell the crown prince about Cambodian Buddhism's worldview, which is carved in a gallery," Ishizawa said. [...]

The Khmer Empire, which built Angkor Wat, also constructed excellent water-utilization systems, which supported a prosperous life for its people.

The crown prince's academic life work is studying transportation by water, water utilization and other water-related affairs. He is said to be interested in water utilization at Angkor Wat.

Father hopes Crown Prince's Cambodia visit will put spotlight on son's murder
Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito left on June 25 for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. During his first trip to Cambodia, he will visit memorial monuments for Japanese volunteer Atsuhito Nakata and police officer Haruyuki Takada who were killed there in 1993.

Nakata, 25, was a member of the U.N. Volunteer Program (UNP) for elections in Cambodia, while the 33-year-old Takada from the Okayama Prefectural Police force was participating in a U.N. peacekeeping mission there. Nakata was shot to death along with a 19-year-old Cambodian interpreter on April 8, 1993, when he and his interpreter were heading for a conference on safety measures in preparation for Cambodian elections after more than 20 years of hostilities.

In an interview with the Mainichi Shimbun, Nakata's 74-year-old father Takehito said in Kobe that the Crown Prince's visit to Cambodia will help today's young people know that there was a young man who risked his life for other people. [...]

In 2010, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko invited him to the Imperial Palace for dinner to cheer him up. He says the Crown Prince's visit to Cambodia will put the spotlight on his son's volunteer work once again.

The president of the Xunta of Galicia (Spain), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has invited Crown Prince Naruhito to visit Galicia. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia is the destination of the Way of St. James, a major Christian pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages that is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Feijoo and the governor of Wakayama Prefecture (southern Japan), Yoshinobu Nisaka, agreed to strengthen the links between Galicia and Wakayama through a joint promotion of the routes to Santiago and Kumano. The three Kumano Sanzan shrines are the Sōhonsha ("head shrines") of all Kumano shrines, lie at between 20 to 40 km of distance one from the other and are connected by the pilgrimage route known as "Kumano Sankeimichi". They belong to the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range“ which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, too.

Here is an article covering the event:

Lagarde warns of 'wartime level' debt
Cutting public debt while encouraging economic growth will be vital in stabilizing the global economy, which is showing a slower than expected recovery, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said Friday. Speaking at the annual plenary meeting of the IMF and World Bank Group in Tokyo, Lagarde stressed that "reducing public debt is very difficult without economic growth." [...]

Lagarde's speech was preceded by an address by Crown Prince Naruhito, who thanked the participants from 188 countries at the plenary meeting for their support toward Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake. "I am glad I can show you a nation that is recovering steadily from the damage, thanks to the support of the international community," he said.

The Crown Prince also touched on some global issues, saying the world faces "various challenges," including stabilizing finances and reducing poverty. Mutual assistance and acting in solidarity will be key in overcoming such difficulties, he said.

I have seen a pic in "Bowing and Curtseying" thread in which Princess Akishino and Princess Kiko were bowing to CP Naruhito while seeing himoff at airport on an official visit. Do they always see himoff at airport while he goes on official visits?

:previous: Well, there seems, in fact, to be a general rule of junior members seeing off senior members. (And, of course, the crown prince is a senior member in relation to Prince and Princess Akishino as this is not so much about age but about rank.)

Whenever the emperor and empress leave the country, the whole family is there to see them off. On the other hand, when twenty-year-old Princess Mako recently left for Edinburgh, there was nobody from her family with her at the airport. At least, there were no pics of her family, but there were pics of her alone. (Which seems to indicate that this is a matter of rank because, if it were a decision based on emotions, I think it would be normal for parents to accompany their young daughter to the airport when she is leaving to pass, for the very first time, several months in a foreign country, all on her own.)

But while I have seen lots of pictures of the imperial family seeing off the emperor and empress, I have seen but a few pictures of Prince and Princess Akishino seeing off the crown prince. I do not know if they are just there "on special occasions" (maybe if the crown prince is leaving for a trip that will take longer than a week or something like that) or if they are always there but we are just not shown the pictures. (Pictures that show "but" the crown prince and Prince and Princess Akishino have, of course, always less news value than pictures that show the emperor and empress along with the whole imperial family.)

It seems to be a custom in the Japenese Imperial Family and also was a tradition in their European counterparts. I can recall seeing pictures of the British royals seeing of the Queen and Duke of Edinburg as well as Hereditary Prince Knud and his family, including little Ingolf and Elisabeth, waving goodbye to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid departing for a long royal tour.
