I read now, that there was a dinner on November 7, which I think Mary did attend. The event is not listed on the calendar for November 7.

Mary and Frederik are tonight Saturday invited to the birthdayparty, sort of, of the Guards Hussars Regiment at Anvorskov Barracks in Vordingborg. (About an hour or so from Rigshospitalet).

The regiment turned 396 years the other day and that is being celebrated with a party tonight.

Frederik served at the Guards Hussars as a new lieutenant. He was back then in charge of a recce platoon. The Guards Hussars is a light cavalry (now light armoured) regiment.

The party tonight is not to be mistaken for the yearly traditional party in the regiment, which is held in February and in which Queen Margrthe nearly always takes part.

I doubt we will see pictures from the party tonight and if we are I suggest you keep an eye on this link: Gardehusarregimentets 396 årsdag

The Guards Hussars is a combat regiment and last week the 39th Danish soldier was killed in Afhanistan, albeit from the Royal Lifeguard Regiment.

Mary looks gorgeous.......I believe we have some babies coming........!!!

I think she looks a little lost and lonely, actually. I hope her sister arrives soon to help out ... and I hope they've found one or two Danish mothers of twins to help advise Mary on what to expect ...

Lost and lonely? I don't see that! I think CP Mary looks glowing, healthy and gorgeous. I hope that there are Danish mothers and fathers of twins who are helping to advise both Mary and Frederik on what to expect. Yes, Mary is the one who's pregnant and the mother gets most of the attention, but both she and Frederik are going through this first time experience of expecting twins together. They both must be increasingly anxious, especially as the birth becomes nearer. Anyway, Mary's father and step-mother will be spending Christmas with them. Maybe after Christmas, one or both of her sisters can visit her.

You don't see it? She's sort of left standing there for a moment or two, and I think she looks a little bewildered. Women in the last stages of pregnancy I think really need to be sheltered, they look so vulnerable. She certainly rushes to Fred's side the moment his hand is extended. Perhaps a choreography lapse, but I do hope she is being given the option of not attending events if she isn't feeling up to it. Duty can wait till next year! And the year after .... and the year after .... and the year after that ........

I don´t see that as "lost and lonely" either. She stands, as any other woman would do, patiently while CP Frederik is doing the honour thing and then she walks to the side of CP Frederik when she is supposed too and not before.

How can you see that as "lost and lonely"?

CP Frederik went off do review the guard of honor, that's all...we just didn't see it on the video. And as CP Mary was standing there waiting until CP Frederik finished, her lady-in-waiting & private secretary Tanja and another officer in uniform stepped up beside her.

Anyway, CP Mary has one more engagement next week (Nov 23) at Fredensborg. After that, she doesn't have any other public engagements...so it looks as though she will be on maternity leave.

I completely agree. It's quite obvious the CP Frederick was off doing official duties and she was just waiting. She actually looked happy and relaxed. It was actually quite refreshing when she was standing there and CP Frederick reached out for her hand...her look was like "Oh, okay" Those two are in their own world, and it's such a pleasure to see :flowers:

I love how the cameraperson focuses on her pregnant belly...what did he expect the twins to do...jump out!?!?!?!?!

Seriously? This isn't her first pregnancy where she has been to official engagements. If anything she has the experiences of the past two pregnancies.

If she was feeling 'vulnerable' or not up to it, don't you think an educated woman in her late thirties can say no?

Terri, thanks for the heads-up about the guard of honour. It would have been good to see that review footage - a line of handsome blokes in uniform saluting! :)

I think Mary looks good, I have to say I watched the video of the arrival and Fred did seem to push past Mary, to go and greet people. She just stood there wondering what was happening. Then he walks back from greeting people and walks straight past her. Mary stood there and appeared dumbfounded by proceedings. Fred then puts his arm out , to motion her over and they walk off together. This is just my opinion but it did look quite rude or remote to me. I felt a little sorry for Mary. She handled the situation well, regained her composure, but I'm sure Fred's lack of regard was noted. Just MY reading of this. Fred still looks unwell to me.

Hi Greenways, Terri explained that Fred had to see to a guard of honour before he could return and look after Mary - I think the footage must have edited a fair bit out.... Fred does look pale. It must be difficult being a Navy man - hence bearded - and still do military routines. The beard looks dashing in the Naval uniform, but less so in this one IMO.

These pics show that the princess feels comfortable enough in her later stage of pregnancy to get dressed up and go out on a cold night to support the regiment.
She looks great and elegant. I imagine if she felt less than on par she wouldn't go.

Mary looks great and it appeared to me that she just looked a bit confused for a second such as, " where did he go?" then "do I go over with him?" and then her LIW moved towards Mary at the same time Frederik walked back to escort Mary inside. I've been through that before.

Mary looked great & very relaxed at this event. She doesn't seem to be bothered stepping out at her last stage of pregnancy. I love that cape.
I just feel sorry for Frederik to be in such a blue colored uniform. What does the color symbolize?

IMO, Mary looks really bad in this blue dress. It has really nice color and matches Mary's pale complexion and dark hair but the dress is ugly. I understand that Mary is heavily pregnant but why she wore a dress a few sizes too big and so shapeless?:ermm:

It must be only six to eights weeks or even less away from Mary having the twins and she looks wonderful (as she normallly does), however at this stage she must be feeling a little tired and have a few aches and pain but you would never know by the photos of her recent events.

Thanks for the clips and pics :flowers:

For those interested in uniforms and history:

Frederik is here wearing the full dress uniform of the Horse Squadron of the Guards Hussars. The jacket he is wearing is called a dolman, often mistaken with the fur hussars often carry over their left shoulder. But that short jacket is simply called a fur. The fur serves several purposes, mainly to look dashing, but also to be worn for additional warmth. On the battlefield the fur provided very excellent protection against sabre cuts to the left side.
Frederik is here wearing the tent hat of a guards regiment. He is wearing the blue dolman of the regiment. Now, in the mid 1700's the Hungarians (including hussars) didn't use bottons yet, they used cords to keep their clothes in place and that was adopted by the hussars regiments that were formed in that period. The white piping on the back of the dolman was also typical Hungarian fashion of the period.
What cannot be seen in this picture is the depeche.bag, which is always hanging from the left side of a hussar. In this picture you can see the three straps going down from the hussars who is standing with his back to the camera. One of the countless tasks of hussars was to carry messages - in this bag. And that is symbolised by constantly carrying this depeche bag, which is always beautifully decorated.

Hussars are light cavalry, so they didn't require the heavy and knee-long boots worn by heavy dragoons and curiassiers, who rode in dense formations and thus required protection for their legs when they rode with their knees locked behind the knees of the troopers next to them.
Hussars, who most often used skirmish tactics wore short fur lined boots instead.

Now, hussars became fashionable in the mid 1700's where the light cavalry used by the Austrian empire was a true menace for the Preussians and as such all European countries worth mentioning raised hussar regiments inspired directly by the Hungarians.
They became an instant hit. Partly because their was a genuine need for light cavalry, but also because hussar uniforms were dashing. Any hussars with just a little respect for himself sported an impressive moustache and acted (and was expected to act) like he personally was God's gift to women. (Hence all the references to women of the light cavalry and all that..).
Hussar regiments attracted young men of "good" families in particular, partly because of the uniform but also because a good hussar officer (and trooper for that matter) had to show a good deal of initiative and more often than not operated independantly. That in contrast to the heavy cavalry regiments where blind obediance and as little imagination as possible was actually preferred. With a good reason! (*)

In the clip we hear trompeters (not buglars). Beforehand when cavalry were still mounted, it happened more often than not that the horses knew the signals better than the new troopers. So for example the trooper may have thought he heard the signal to turn left but the seasoned horse knew better, and would instead start to trot, regardless of what her silly rider was thinking. Hussars often rode mares as they were more nimble and well suited for light cavalry.

It's such a fascinating subject and I could go on, but I'd better stop now.

(*) One of the primary tasks of heavy cavalry was to charge infantry. And if a trooper had just a little bit of imagination, he would quickly realise that here he was, riding in the middle of a dense formation and he would only be able to go forward. Forward towards the infantry square in front of him, knowing full well that every single man in that infantry square hate him personally and that every single one of them has aimed their muskets at him! - He can't get away, so he is basically toast!

Here is a picture of Mary from TV2 Gossip: http://vip.tv2.dk/article.php/id-35158161:udringet-mary-stråler-af-sundhed.html?rss

The interesting thing here is the online voting (afstemning). Most believe Mary will give birth in December.

Thanks for the pic Aotearoagal. The uniform is red if I remember correctly and the fur is absolutely magnificent. A pity it isn't shown.
The hussar in your picture is carrying a fur chako, which was actually the most common form of headgear for hussars.

The Danish hussars wear a kepi with an adornment called a svejf, which is meant to resemble the mane of a horse. Not the tail, because that would make them buttheads and we don't want that, no!!
