30th Anniversary of King Baudouin's death

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
This is the thread of our late King Baudouin.
Nothing to do with Prince laurent and Delphine.

A review of the earlier news and discussion in this thread will demonstrate why questions were asked (which Linda_26 was kind enough to answer) about Prince Laurent and Princess Delphine's relation to King Baudouin.

Still remember the day. I found out with BBC teletext !I as stunned and I couldn't believe it !

It's been 30 years since King Boudewijn departed to the heavenly realms.

The messages left on the BRF's social media are a good measure of his reign. The man who swore the oath of allegiance at only 20 years of age, is remembered most affectionately.
:easter:

I'm sparing a thought for King Albert as well, it must be difficult to be the youngest child and have both elder siblings long departed.

And his half-brother - although younger than him - already passed away too:sad:

His younger half-sisters are alive, but AFAIK, he doesn't have contact with the elder one of them.

What sort of relationship did the late king Baudouin have with his half siblings Prince Alexandre, Princess Marie-Christine and Princess Marie-Esméralda?

Until 1960, Baudouin was close to his half-sibilings, father and stepmother. However, after his marriage to Fabiola and Leopold and Lilian's move to Argenteuil, there was a sudden and certainly painful break in the relationships. The causes of it are complex, and partially also of a political nature, they certainly don't belong here. In any case, the contact between Argenteuil and Laeken (and so, also between Baudouin and his half-sibilings), from what I read, became basically non-existent. Later, Marie-Christine broke every contact with the Belgian royal family, making serious accusations especially against her mother, but that's another story

Its all very sad Linda and you're right its for another story!

Crown Prince Leka has made a BEAUTIFUL post about his godfather King Boudewijn:
On the 30th anniversary of his death, I remember with longing and admiration the great king of a small country, guided by a high sense of duty and inspired by a deep faith, full of love for common people.
My emotions are still alive from the first meeting with him. Publicly perceived as reserved and timid, King Baudouin knew how to convey, in intimacy, a humanity, a kindness and a simplicity that have marked me forever.

King Filip and Princess Eléonore, accompanied by Queen Emerita Sofia of Spain, have inaugurated the Memorial for King Boudewijn in Villa Astrida.

Also in attendance were Princess Margaretha, Prince Nikolaus and Princess Nora of Liechtenstein, Prince Guillaume and Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg and their son Prince Paul-Louis. What a turnout!

Very interesting article. It says that on the day of Baudouin's interment in the Royal Crypt at Laeken, after all the TV cameras were gone and with only his family present the new King Albert II turned to his brother's coffin and said "HELP ME".

There's no "infinite cry" emoji. But imagine there's one here. Good Lord

For all his faults as a husband and as a father, Albert was always supremely devoted to his brother and loved Baudouin very very much, his sudden death broke his heart into a million pieces, plus he had to get a crown he probably never wanted, I think he finally rested when he was able to abdicate on his son.

It's good to see that not only one of Baudouin's brother's children was present but also two of his sister's children. And wonderful that the queen emerita of Spain interrupted her time in Mallorca to preside over this ceremony of her close friend.

I agree. Albert had been the happy go lucky spare. He was too young to remember their mother Queen Astrid and too young to have been marked by the trauma of the BRF imprisonment by the Nazis as were his siblings.

He entered into marriage with a gorgeous young Italian princess and dedicated himself to la dolce vita. When Baudouin married in 1960 Albert had every reason to believe that the Royal nursery at Laeken would soon be full.

Sadly it didn't happen but even then Albert had every reason to expect that Baudouin would live to a ripe old age and that Philippe would succeed his uncle...as he had been groomed to.

Fate had other plans.

So Albert took over and except for his clumsy catastrophic handling of the Delphine Boel I think he did an exceptional job as king.

Thanks for sharing, I had never heard about this specific episode. The death of his older brother was clearly hertbreaking for Albert. His emotion in those days and his visible shaking on the day of his accession are proof of that. And many years later (in 2014), he still talks about it with much difficulty. I had shared the video of the interview on another thread, but I think it also belongs here (the part about Baudouin's death begins around minute 39/40)
Interestingly, he says that one of his fears, apparently shared by the then Prime Minister, was that he would be the last King of the Belgians.

Well, fortunately Albert wasn't the last King of the Belgians, because his reign was a good one, and now there will even be a Queen Regnant in the future.
EDIT: Burn in hell, Van Rossem! The Saxe-Coburgs aren't going anywhere.

More photos from yesterday's event. Wish we had videos, I'd like to hear Princess Margaretha's speech. :flowers:

You're absolutely right, Albert proved to be a successful king, but I can understand his fears in the days immediately following his brother's sudden death.

In the pictures of yesterday's event, nice to see Baudouin's niece Marie-Astrid as well. I'd also like to hear what Margaretha said, her interventions in the rtbf documentary were quite touching- it's evident they were very close

Pss Delphine opened an open-air photo exhibition about King Baudouin close to the Royal Observatory in Uccle, Brussels (where she lives). She did so together with the mayor of Uccle, Boris Dilliès.

The princess also put a wreath of flowers near the statue of Baudouin, which is located in front of the observatory.

The princess says she finds it important for herself to honour a relative for whom she has the greatest admiration. She adds that he passed far too early and that she is proud to be able to honour him in the town where she lives.

Princess Margaretha offered thanks in name of Luxembourgers, Belgians and Spaniards. I guess it was to emphasize that she was there not as a Princess of Liechtenstein, but as King Boudewijn's niece.
3 out of 5 of GD Josephine-Charlotte's children were there.

Queen Sofia embraced Princess Margaretha and her husband Prince Nicholas with special warmth and emotion.

I sense that they are close friends?

Queen Sofia seems to enjoy the best relationship with other royal houses and is always the obvious choice to sent to these events.
Princess Eleonore gave queen Sofia a nice curtsey too.

Remembering King Baudouin of Belgium.
There was also a memorial Mass in Motril to mark the anniversary.
