"Royals and the Reich: Princes von Hessen in Nazi Germany" Jonathan Petropoulos 2006

I've read the biography by Lovell, and I liked her comprehensive account of the Mitfords' lives very much. You cannot help but admire Decca (no, no, I am not a Communist, although I am Russian! :)) for her determination and perseverance.

    Royals With Honorary Doctorates

The Sultan of Brunei holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Oxford and Aberdeen; maybe there are more.

    Royal Orders and Decorations

I've noticed that Emperor Akihito is the only non-Christian monarch who is a Knight of the Garter; his ancestors also received the blue riband of the most exalted English order of chivlry. Are Emperors of Japan excepted from the general prohibition on awarding the Garter to non-Christians, which...

Royalty (Fictional and Real) In Fictional Movies

I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the film. This 'postmodernist' version can play well, if it was done well. Neither Sofia nor her father, my favourite director, have ever left upset with their work.

    Russian Imperial and Other Titles

I am from Russia, and I assure you that there is no such word as 'czarina', царина, in any of the dictionaries of Russian. It doesn't matter whether the empress was widowed or not -- she was called царица, 'tsaritsa'. 'Tsarina' is an example of mistranslation. That is manifestly incorrect; no...

Anna Anderson's claim to be Grand Duchess Anastasia

I'd like to remind everyone that a group of leading forensic experts determined in the 1990s that Anastasia's remains were among the bones which had been found in Sverdlovskaya Oblast.

Prince Akishino & Princess Kiko: Current Events part 1

Moreover, it is entirely possible that the child's sex has already been determined (or confirmed?) by sonographers.

    Catherine II "The Great" (1729-1796)

I don't want to go into dicussing the person of Paul I, but his reign was quite interesting. There is no evidence that Alexander I's tomb has ever been opened; it follows that it is unknown whether it is empty or not.

Tsar Alexander III (1845-1894) and Empress Marie Feodorovna (Dagmar) (1847-1928)

Warren, thank you very much for welcoming me back on to the board! :) wetken, your idea regarding the apology is good, but it won't come to pass. First of all, the present Russian government has distanced itself from the Bolshevik government of 1918, even from the Soviet government of 1991; not...

    Prince Philip's 85th Birthday: June 10, 2006

With regard to the history of Kenya and Kenyatta's biography, the Prince's remark was, in my opinion, quite... risky. ;) Nevertheles... Happy birthday Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh!

King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Diamond Jubilee, June 2006

Congratulations to His Majesty the King! Long may he reign! :) BTW, Russian expats in Thailand admire him and his dedication to that beautiful country

    Will Charles Ever Reign?

I think that in the end the current honorific will not be changed, but it it only my opinion.

    European/Japan royal marriages

I daresay this info is incorrect. This proposition was not entertained by Nicholas II and his daughters owing to the fact that there were no unmarried sons of marriageable age of either Meiji or Taisho Emperors then.

    Russian Palaces

Hm... Never heard anything like that, although there exists a great many of the 'Catherine Tales', so to say. :) What palace could it be? The Chinese Palace in Oranienbaum?

    Russian Palaces

Hmm... I've always thought that Catherine the Great was not too keen on extravaganza. Actually, she was not amused by the over-ornate Catherine Palace in Tsrskoye Selo and ordered another palace to be built there as her personal residence. As for the Communists, they certainly did not blow up...

Names and Titles In Other Languages

It seems that we Russians now 'translate' only the names of British monarchs; we call the British Queen Елизавета (Yelizaveta). However, Charles is just that, Чарльз, although he is likely to become Карл (Karl) upon his accession.

    Non-British Styles and Titles

Not necessarily, the second son of Queen Victoria was created Duke of Edinburgh. The title merges into the Crown and 'disappears'. A monarch cannot hold a peerage dignity from himself.

    Duchess of Cornwall Jewellery 2: Feb-Nov 2005

That's unusual IMO. The Garter is usually worn, together with a lot of other accoutrements, to the Gater ceremonies in Windsor and to the coronations. And Charles is not wearing the Collar of the Order of the Garter on the photo...
