Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall Current Events 4: August-September 2005

VJ Day The Duke of Edinburgh was wearind a suit with his medals, just like the other veterans at that gathering. The Prince of Wales had to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph, and this kind of event requires wearing the uniform, I suppose.

    The Plantagenets (1154-1399)

The Battle of Bosworth Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Bosworth Field. King Richard III was slain in the battle, and the House of Tudor obtained the English Crown.

    The Plantagenets (1154-1399)

To be precise, Catherine was Valois by blood. But still, marrying a commoner was no mean feat for French royals as well. Nevertheless he managed to get her pregnant with Gloriana before the (open) marriage ceremony. :)

    Orders & Sashes

The Shah of Iran wears both the Collar and the Sash of the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav on this photo. Those insignia are not to be used together.

    Orders & Sashes

Yes... Princess Anne was appointed to that Order for bravery during a kidnap attempt in 1974--a knighthood for swearing, so to speak. :) I think it is interesting to find some picures of royals who wear their ribbons incorrectly.

They do not bury the Spanish Royals outright?

Princely and Noble Families of Hungary and Bohemia

There was a movement in Bohemia to convert the Dual Monarchy into the Triple Monarchy, putting Bohemia on equal footing with Austria and Hungary. Emperor Franz Joseph and King Ferenc József was to be crowned as King František Josef at Prague... It did not come to pass, of course.

    The Plantagenets (1154-1399)

And then Catherine of Valois married Owen Tudor... Small wonder that most of the Tudors were funny peculiar. ;)

    Queen Victoria and Haemophilia

Thank you! :) The author of the tree did not include Prince Sigismund, the son of Empress Friedrich--it is most likely that the boy died of meningitis.

William and Harry's Relationships with the Spencers

That's quite likely--but knowing about the father-son relations it is easy to suppose that the King was disappointed by his own pick when Augusta sided with Frederick.

    Queen Victoria and Haemophilia

Here's a family three showing the descent of haemophilia in the British Royal Family. The haemophiliacs and the carriers are enclosed in the boxes. From Wikipedia.

    Orders & Sashes

The highest degree of the Order of St Olav, the Grand Cross, has the star and the ribbon. The Collar is a special distinction.

William and Harry's Relationships with the Spencers

To be nitpicky, Frederick's wife was Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. George II didn't hate her--but he wouldn't like whoever his son could've chosen.

    Diana's Styles and Titles

O tempora, o mores! BTW, Camilla is also a descendant of Charles II--the Duke of Richmond and Lennox, an illegitimate child of the King and Louise Keroualle, is counted among her ancestors. He was a grandson of one of the thirteen competitors for the Scottish Crown, which was left unclaimed...

William and Harry's Relationships with the Spencers

All in all there was no love lost between King George II and the Prince of Wales. Frederick married a German Princess, but the King didn't like her and banished them from the Court.

    Diana's Styles and Titles

There is a certain doubt regarding whether Charles II was a father of all children acknowledged by him. Do you mean Robert I (the Bruce), the King of Scots?

Monarchs & Royals During WWI & WWII?

The escape of Haakon VII was indeed a remarkable event. He sailed to the UK in HMS Devonshire, which was the only ship to receive a distress signal from the aircraft carrier Glorious--she had met two German battleships. The Devonshire had to observe radio silence--the British could not take the...

King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and Marie Antoinette of Austria (1755-1793)

She already had had smallpox, if I remember correctly.

King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and Marie Antoinette of Austria (1755-1793)

Maria Carolina (the third sister to be betrothed to King Ferdinand) flatly refused to go to the Imperial Vault, and the Empress, having criticised the lack of piety in the young generation, went there to pray herself... As it was usual for Maria Theresa.

    Orders & Sashes

The second is not the case, I think--ribbons (the ones that go across the shoulder, I mean, not the small ones on the chest) go with the highest degree only.

King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and Marie Antoinette of Austria (1755-1793)

Yes, that's true. Maria Josepha of Bavaria was Crown Prince Joseph's wife, who died of smallpox. Maria Theresa sent her daughter of the same name, who was set to go to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (Maria Josepha was engaged to King Ferdinand), to pray in the Imperial Vault before leaving Vienna...

King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and Marie Antoinette of Austria (1755-1793)

Do you mean Maria Theresa sending her daughter to pray among the corpses of Habsburgs?

    Queen Victoria and Haemophilia

A little about the disease. Classic haemophilia is caused by a deficiency of a certain gene located on X chromosome. Females have two of them, and the 'good' gene prevents them from developing the symptoms; of course, there is a very-very slim chance of getting two chromosomes with the 'bad'...

    Queen Victoria and Haemophilia

At present this is an unconfirmed hypothesis that lacks proof.
