King Charles & Queen Camilla - Visit to Australia and Samoa: October 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Naturally life carries on even when there are famous visitors to the country! But it is interesting to see the various ways the visit has touched some Australians. A colleague and I were chatting and he said that his wife, and her friends threw a Royal Brunch Birthday Party! My niece's Year 5 class (she's the teacher) have been studying the role of the British monarchy and its connection to Australia. They have followed the royal visit daily and had a class party to "farewell" the King and Queen! :)
It looked like a really lovely time to visit Australia ,not too hot but still plenty of beautiful sunshine.

It's most interesting to read the comments about Australia retaining the monarchy or becoming a republic. Thanks for that. No one mentioned, no one left out.
Not being an Australian, I don't have an opinion whether Australia should become a republic or not.

I do however find the behavior of the PMs unprofessional.
Australia is still a monarchy and as such King Charles is still the Head of State - on top of that he is an honored guest.

The politicians can be republicans all they want and argue their points all day long, that's fair enough IMO. But when the show is on, they have a public role to play as a part of their office. So refusing to meet with King Charles is unprofessional, it's insulting to both King Charles as a guest as well as the nation he de facto represents (which is predominantly the UK). It's disrespectful to the Australian monarchists as well as the democracy. As long as Australia has not abolished the monarchy by democratic means, they just have to accept the fact that Australia is a monarchy or they should not have accepted the office they hold.
What is even worse, I dare say, is that it is stupid behavior. Such behavior reduce support for their cause rather than increase support. They are pandering to their extreme voters, rather than trying to win over more by acting professional like statesmen.

If they truly cannot bear to be in the same room or shake hands with King Charles, a man who is merely a representative like themselves, then they should step down from that office. They forget that as elected PMs they also represent those who did not vote for them.

Why does he feel the need to comment on his majesty's visit to one of his realms? Do the prime ministers of other realms also have public opinions about this visit and at other times about how he goes about his engagements in the UK?
If he was asked a question he needed to respond without any comment regarding the senator. A tactful response, I would have thought.

Yes, can I just echo @An Ard Ri 's sentiments and say many thanks for the updates and insight. Much appreciated! :flowers:

I have to say I got a very positive vibe overall from the visit and bar the incidents here and there from protesters it went very smoothly.
We are very lucky here to have had boots on the ground for the visit and explained who's who to us up here in the Northern Hemisphere.

What a fantastic opportunity for you niece's class that the royal visit occurred during the year when the students' curriculum covered the role of the monarch in Australia!

Australia's Prime Minister will be attending the CHOGM Leaders summit in Samoa.

A wonderful warm welcome to the King and Queen.

The king attended a Sustainable Business Forum in Samoa
Queen Camilla was treated to a concert performed by children in Samoa

An elder agrees that her behavior was disgusting and that she is an embarrassment, not what she appears to be. This lady happily takes a $217,000 annual salary from taxpayers. And does this disgusting behavior it seemed self serving and seems to be know to make a circus of things.

Apparently the heckler is a bit out there and shouldn’t be taken seriously allegedly

I’ve drunk kava a couple of times when visiting Fiji. One of its effect is as a muscle relaxant and it just made me sleepy. I knew a couple of Fijians in Melbourne who had drunk it longterm and it tended to make them lethargic, a well known effect. I’m sure Charles only had a sip or two however.

In what ways does it disappoint you?
I do appreciate the king making the effort although he is still battling cancer but the whole visit so far feels a little underwhelming and the contrast between the current visit and the flashbacks the official profile for the royal family is sharing is quite the opposite!

I do feel a bit puzzled about what their view of the new reign is going to be, the coronation was a let down but then we had the state openings of parliament which was as grand as it could, the outgoing and incoming state visits were as grand as expected but the first visit of the new monarch to countries that they are Head of State felt a bit underwhelming, although I see the people enthusiastically greeting them but my issue is with the schedule it self it is the schedule of a routine visit by a heir to the throne not the new monarch!

He could have cancelled the whole thing but he didn’t. He was determined to visit Australia. As for the coronation being a let down, what did you expect?
What do you have in your country. ?

My country is a former monarchy so we don’t have a coronation, what I was expecting of the first British coronation in 70 years is tradition, if the state opening of parliament that happens every year and sometimes twice a year is more grand than the first coronation in 70 years then am allowed to feel underwhelmed!

I would say because the King is aware of what is going on in his country and he pairs down the ceremonial tells you why we still have a monarchy and you don’t.

If we are looking at Pathé-videos from 1954, there will ofcourse be a feeling of being underwhelmed.

But the pomp from then belonged to a different time and different era and will never more return.

No doubt the program in Australia would have been longer had the King not been affected by cancer, and probably also included a visit to NZ…. Now it is what it is and they have to make the best out of a difficult situation… I think they have done very well.

Of course the Visit could not have been as grant as the 1954 Tour but why not keep it like the latest Tour of the late Queen which was not so long ago and included also more formal Events and at last one official Dinner for Example.

Indeed.
Not to mention that the King and Queen are not that young anymore. They likely need and deserve a breather here and there.
