Japanese Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association, delivers a speech during the award ceremony of the 21st Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo on October 22, 2009. He also presented British sculptor Richard Long and Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel with their awards. The Praemium Imperiale is an annual award given for global achievement in the arts, and was first held in 1989.

Japanese Prince Hitachi honorary patron of the Japan Art Association and Princess Hanako, were present during the award ceremony of the 22nd Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo on October 13, 2010.
The Praemium Imperiale a.k.a. 'Nobel prize in the arts world' is an annual award given for global achievement in the arts, and is one of the most lucrative prizes in the arts world, in the theatre and film category.
This year the Praemium Imperiale is dedicated to the Prince Takamado's memory.

Prince Hitachi and his wife Princess Hanako attended a meeting hosted by the
Japanese Society for Preservation of Birds at a hotel in Tokyo, May 15, 2011.

TIH the Prince Hitachi and Princess Hanako visited Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture to encourage the nuclear refugees from Fukushima Prefecture on May 27th, 2011.

HIH the Princess Hitachi Hanako visited Iwate prefecture and encouraged earthquake refugees on June 6th, 2011.
The Princess Hanako has also visited the shelter for animals affected by earthquake and encouraged volunteers taking care of animals. The Princess Hanako is the honorary president of Japan Animal Welfare Society.

TIH the Prince Hitachi and the Princess Hanako visited Hachinohe City and Hashikami Town, Aomori Prefecture on Junem15th, 2011.
They also visited disaster-prevention forest in Hachinohe City. The forest was destroyed by Tsunami.
They planted seedlings of Japanese black pine in hope of restoring of disaster-prevention forest there.

TIH Prince Hitachi and HIH Princess Hanako left Japan for United Kingdom on July 6th, 2011, to attend the Announcement Press Conference of "Praemium Imperiale" and the reception held by HM Queen Elizabeth II on 11th July.

Japan Art Association Announces 2011 Praemium Imperiale Laureates in London
Prince Hitachi and Princess Hitachi joined Hisashi Hieda, chairman of the Japan Art Association, and British International Advisor Lord Patten of Barnes for the awards announcement in London, marking the first time their Imperial Highnesses have left Japan since the devastating tsunami in March.
Following the announcement, Prince and Princess Hitachi and British Laureates Dame Judi Dench and Anish Kapoor were received by Queen Elizabeth II at a congratulatory reception in Buckingham Palace.
 
TIH the Prince and the Princess Hitachi were welcomed by HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh during a reception for the Praemium Imperiale Awards at Buckingham Palace on July 11, 2011.

BATSFORD Arboretum was paid a royal visit by members of the Japanese Imperial Family at the weekend as part of their diplomatic visit to the UK.
The visitors were given a tour of the arboretum grounds including Batsford’s new £2 million visitor centre, which was recently completed.- Source

Awards in Tokyo on October 19, 2011. The Praemium Imperiale is a global arts prize awarded
annually by the Japan Art Association.

The Prince and Princess Hitachi together with Prince Jachim and Princess Marie of Denmark
attended the opening of The Wild Swans Exhibition in Tokyo, Thursday, November 3, 2011.

The exhibition, featuring artworks by Queen Margrethe based on the Danish author Hans
Christian Andersen's fairytale, runs until November 13.

The Prince and Princess Hitachi attended the funeral of King George Tupou V in Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa on
March 27, 2012. King George Tupou V of Tonga, who ushered in democracy to the South Pacific archipelago,
was buried in a ceremony that mixed traditional Polynesian ritual with Christian hymn singing on Tuesday.
