Uruguay President Tabare Vazquez ,and his wife, Maria Auxiliadora, are greeted by Japanese Emperor Akihito, and Empress Michiko upon their arrival at Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan, Monday, Dec. 14, 2009. Vazquez was on a five-day official visit to Japan.

Vice-President Xi Jinping of China was received by the HM The Emperor.Mr.Xi Jinping is seen as the next President of China after Mr.Hu Jintao will step down within 2 or 3 years.So,one can not let a powerfull and friendly neighbour wait when Mr.Jinping requested an audience with the Emperor.Flexibility isn't the strongest of points for the Kumaicho and the issue got into a lot of turmoil.The poor Emperor finding himself in the middle of it all.Different cultures,different customs.

Is the Emperor of Japan the only monarch who goes by the title of Emperor? As far as I know, there's no Japanese Empire in existence now.

It is nice to learn about improvements in Emperor Akihito's health. Indeed, it is time for Japanese to have a bit easier life as the Japanese recession has been going quite a while.
 
The government has released a statement on the official duties of the Emperor not stipulated in the Constitution, in the wake of a controversy over whether the government was exploiting the Emperor for political purposes.
"There are various forms of official duties, and it is not realistic to set unified rules," the statement released on Thursday said. "The Cabinet is responsible for giving consideration so that they are carried out in line with the Constitution."
The move came following criticism by the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) over a hastily arranged meeting between the Emperor and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinpin in December last year.

Korean President Lee Myung-bak has invited the Japanese monarch to visit Korea in 2010 to mark the beginning of a new relationship between their countries. The Japanese emperor has yet to respond to the invitation.
"If the Japanese emperor is to visit our country, (he must be) firmly determined to repent for (Japan's) past (wrongdoings) and establish a new Korea-Japan relationship," Prime Minister Chung Un-chan said during an interpellation session at the National Assembly.

HM the Emperor Akihito had granted the audience to Romanian president Basescu on March 10th. The Emperor and the Empress gave a lunch in the Imperial palace also. The Romanian president hopes HM will visit Romania "in the period to come".

TIM the Emperor and the Empress granted an audience to the Malayzian prime minister and his wife at the Imperial Palace on Monday, April 19th 2010.
The Imperial couple has also visited the annual spring gagaku consert on April 20th.

It has been a pleasure to see the Imperial couple undertaking various engagements. I have to say that Her Imperial Majesty looks frail though.
 
Wonderful to see them, but I agree with Al_Bina Her Majesty does look indeed frail.
 
The Imperial couple visits the Japan Prize presentation ceremony

TIM the Emperor and the Empress attended the Japan Prize presentation ceremony at the National Theatre of Japan on April 21, 2010.
The Japan Prize, presented by the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan, is awarded to people from all over the world whose achievements in science and technology are recognized as the contribution to the development of the fields and the advancement of world peace and prosperity.

It would be fair to say that Japan has always been at the forefront of science and technology. Hopefully some works presented will contribute to finding better ways to address woes of mankind (e.g., renewable sources of energy).
Empress Michiko's kimono is absolutely amazing.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is greeted by Japanese Emperor Akihito
at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, June 1st, 2010.
Wen and Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama agreed to set up a hotline
following a series of naval incidents, and to resume formal negotiations
on jointly exploring offshore gas and oil fields.
