Magnus was named after the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne.
The Old Norse name for Charlemagne was Karlamagnus.
 
The thing that really makes that interesting is the definition of Karla Mangus - Charles the Great. In naming his son Mangus, Olaf was naming him Great.
