Historian Herman Lindqvist writes at his chronicle in Svensk Damtidning about how the king became a scout.
Herman Lindqvist: The king is forever a scout - and always prepared
Several times each year, King Carl Gustaf attends various scout events. He is honorary chairman of the World Scout Foundation and is photographed every year at any major scout camp in some remote corner of the world. Many may think that the king should have grown out of his scout shirt a long time ago.
The truth is that the king will never leave the scouts - he "is always prepared". Scouting was the opening for him to the world, freedom and adventure beyond the Palace, the court, the protocol and the compulsion. The king tells that it was his mother, Princess Sibylla, who persuaded him to go to the first scout meeting.
Both the king's father prince Gustaf Adolf and Sibylla were active scout leaders and the king's mother thought Carl Gustaf would be also.
The king told me that at the age of nine he went very reluctantly and dutifully to the meeting at Blasieholmen. It became a success. For the first time, he met happy and relaxed young people who did fun things. The king has always loved to be in the woods and fields, here every meeting became an adventure.
At the Palace he was surrounded by women alone; sisters, mother and nannies. At the scouts there were boys of same age and leaders who taught useful things. He got the scout name "Mowgli". The king told that when he came home from the meetings he was often so excited: "I wanted to manage myself, cook my own dinner, so I warmed a jar of sausage or a jar of ravioli!"
Now the king has been the honorary chairman of the World Scout Foundation for over 40 years.
