Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, the Ruler of Abu Dhabi who died on Tuesday aged 86, was President of the United Arab Emirates and a moderate but visionary leader of his desert people.
The sheikh was the principal architect of the UAE, the federation of seven emirates formed when the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971. It became the longest and most successful example of regional integration in modern Arab history.
Sheikh Zayed's foresight ensured that the UAE's citizens pursued the road from poverty to riches in less than a generation, moving within years of his accession into urban settlements built by oil wealth, but without losing too much of their cultural or religious heritage. The freedom of worship offered to Christians, and allowances made for expatriates to follow Western ways, helped fuel development but sometimes sat uncomfortably with his credentials as a Muslim head of state.
Pious and disciplinarian, Sheikh Zayed's secret was that he never forgot his desert origins, his Islamic faith or his youthful passion for traditional sports and conservation.
The late Sir Wilfred Thesiger recalled his first meeting with Sheikh Zayed in 1948 in a famous passage from his masterpiece Arabian Sands: "He was a powerfully built man of about 30 with a brown beard. He had a strong intelligent face, with steady observant eyes, and his manner was quiet and masterful."
Although Zayed amassed an estimated $20 billion, he always lived modestly. He enjoyed hunting parties with falcons and desert journeys to visit his kinsmen. A keen shot, he gave up hunting with rifles at the age of 25, as a contribution to conserving wildlife.
In a politically turbulent region, the UAE under Sheikh Zayed was a model of stability and progress, with women enjoying freedoms not permitted in more austere Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. His foreign policy paid attention to the plight of the Palestinians and also supported developing nations - especially Pakistan, where Sheikh Zayed often felt at home, enjoying falconry parties in the mountains.
A noted philanthropist, he believed oil wealth was a gift from God that should be shared with countries and people in need. Abu Dhabi sits astride a tenth of the world's known oil reserves and a major proportion of its natural gas. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Arab Economic Development was set up a few months before independence from Britain to handle aid flows, and Sheikh Zayed subsequently channelled economic assistance to at least 40 countries on three continents. He also endowed many charitable appeals.
His skills as a mediator were celebrated throughout the region. They had been honed during a long apprenticeship as Ruler's Representative in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi, lasting from 1946 until he took over as Ruler in a bloodless coup 20 years later. His sense of honour became a trademark. He never betrayed the solemn fraternal oath he and his brothers swore before their mother Sheikha Salaama not to murder each other.
Sheikh Zayed's statesmanship was tested by the tortuous and quarrelsome negotiations leading to the creation of the UAE. It was remarkable, given the history of enmity between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, that the federation survived with few stresses and strains after 1972, when Ras al Khaimah joined. In 1981 Sheikh Zayed persuaded the five other sovereign Arab Gulf kingdoms - Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait - to unite in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), an economic community with ambitions to move towards a federated structure. History of Zayed on a postcard!

ABU DHABI — Amar Thokale, an Indian expatriate from Mumbai, wants to gift a postcard to the new President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Thokale's postcard contains the history of the late president, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in perhaps one of the most compact forms, squeezing in over 11,700 characters into a 8.7cm by 8.7cm area.
"This is how I wanted to show my dedication and gratitude to the great leader who has transformed a desert into an oasis of progress," said Thokale an aeronautical engineer by profession whose name figures in the Limca Book of World of Records for micro writing the history of Chathrapathi Shivaji, the Maratha King in a postcard way back in 1996.
And his latest magnum opus on Shaikh Zayed is not a mere jumble of closely packed letters but an orderly succession of meticulously written text when brought under a magnifying glass. The text is taken from the book The Leader and The March written by Hamdi Tamam and interlaced by Thokale's own poetry.
The Herculean task, Thokale achieves by huddling himself under a lambent table lamp and bringing his eyes at not less than three centimetres away from the postcard to push his 0.5 Rotoring Tikky pencil on the surface.
He has also written the words 'The President His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan' 124 times, which comes to 7,000 characters, behind a 250 fils stamp with Shaikh Zayed's picture on it. According to him, he took two days to complete the task.
Thokale's interest in micro writing was first triggered by a newspaper report on one Anna Dev Varma who wrote a record 8,242 characters on a postcard. He successfully challenged the record by accommodating 8,964 characters on the same area.
Later after a 16 days continuous effort, he found his place in the Limca Book of World of Records for copying the history of Shivaji in 20,2741 characters on one side of a postcard.
While admitting that the task is very strenuous on his eyes, Thokale says that he takes a break every 10 minutes and washes his eyes with cold water while sitting on his hobby, for which he finds time on his off days or after office hours.
But he makes it clear that he has no intention of commercialising his talent and make money out of it.
"I want to do something that will be of interest and be kept for posterity, a work that will looked upon with respect and recognition," says the 30-year-old aeronautical engineer.
About his next project, Thokale says he has no clue. "I don't know when will I next get inspired by some great personalities like Shaikh Zayed or Maharaja Shivaji. I will wait until I come across something as inspiring and worth-spending my time and energy on," he quips.

AL AIN — Shahlah, a 14-year-old girl whose trauma following the divorce of her parents had moved Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to issue special directives for her welfare, has finally found an appropriate rehabilitation home with a welfare organisation.
On the directives of Minister of State Affairs Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Shaikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who heads the Dar Zayed for Comprehensive Welfare, Ali Salem Al Amery, its director, received Shahlah Mohammed Abdurrahman, who had run away from her home three years ago.
“We prepared a complete report of Shahlah and all information related to her. Dar Zayed is ready to accept Shahlah and we will do our best to offer a very good standard of living to her,” Al Amery said.
Al Amery said Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had read of the girl in the newspapers during his recovery period in Switzerland, and had given directives to help the poor child offering her all medical, financial and educational facilities.
Shahlah was born in Iran after her mother left the UAE following her divorce. Her mother had informed her former husband of the baby and returned her to him after four years of separation. However, Shahlah left her home because of bad treatment. The Ajman Police, who found her, could not trace her home even after trying for 45 days as she had given them misleading information, fearing that she would be sent back home where her father lived with her step mother. The girl’s plight came to light after a lady, who saw her picture in a newspaper, told the police about the family, which she knew well.
Shahlah spent the last three years under the protection of a philanthropist, who gave her a suitable residence and a good standard of living like one of his children. He had also helped Shahlah to be in contact with her mother, including making available to her mother a visit visa to come to the UAE to see her daughter. Shahlah and her mother thanked Shaikh Zayed for the favours and Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Shaikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan for their kindness in helping her.

Just for the record...Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who was the oldest son of the Emirs first wife took power.
As for a big conflict between clans I´m not sure, Zayeds sons with Fatima are hardly a clan in itself but a group perhaps?. The current crown prince is the most powerful of them.
