Japan emperor, empress celebrate 30th wedding anniversary - Kyodo News
[...]

"We are deeply grateful for having been able to experience many things together and come this far by helping each other and sharing joys and sorrows while receiving support from many people," the couple said.

Their married life has seen the birth of their only daughter, Princess Aiko, now 21, and the 63-year-old emperor's May 2019 enthronement, launching a new imperial era. But it has also seen the 59-year-old empress struggle with long-term mental health issues.

[...]

Much of their five years as emperor and empress has coincided with the coronavirus pandemic, and they have sought to abide by their principle of standing by the people, reiterating it in their statement.

The two said they will continue believing it is important for the imperial family to "share the people's sorrows and joys."

The emperor and empress were married on June 9, 1993, after first meeting in 1986 at a reception in Tokyo for Spain's Princess Elena. They saw each other again in 1992, and the then-crown prince proposed to the empress, then known as Masako Owada, that year.

The Harvard- and Oxford-educated former diplomat has said that she was touched when he told her, "I will protect you with all my might for my entire life."

[...]

The Imperial Household Agency, which manages imperial family matters, revealed in 2004 that she was diagnosed with stress-induced "adjustment disorder."

The empress continues to struggle with it, with her doctors stating last December that although she is recovering, her condition fluctuates and she may need time to recharge after major or successive events.

Throughout their marriage, the emperor has been strongly protective of his wife. He made waves at a May 2004 press conference by stating, "It is true there were developments that were regarded as denying Masako's career (as a diplomat) as well as her personality."

[...]

Over the years, the empress has slowly increased her public appearances, visiting evacuation centers to meet people affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan's northeast, and going on her first official overseas trip in 11 years to the Netherlands in 2013.

When the emperor ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1, 2019, ushering in the Reiwa imperial era with the empress, concern grew further that she may be overexerting herself with new official duties as empress.

[...]

The coronavirus pandemic, which hit Japan at the beginning of 2020, shrank the number of events for the imperial family to attend in person, prompting the couple to join events online.

But with the pandemic tailing off, more official duties have been conducted in person recently. For the first time since the enthronement, the couple traveled to commemorate the victims of the March 2011 natural disaster with a visit to Iwate Prefecture in early June.

Japan Imperial Couple's visit to Indonesia has 2 significant aspects - The Mainichi
[...]

The first is that this is the Emperor's first visit to a foreign country for the purpose of international goodwill since his enthronement. In foreign countries, His Majesty is treated as Japan's head of state, and his comments and actions there carry much more weight than when he was crown prince. It is hoped that the visit will promote mutual understanding and deepen friendly relations between the two countries.

[...]

Another significant aspect of the visit is that Empress Masako will be accompanying His Majesty. [...] This will be her first long-term visit to a foreign country in 21 years, since December 2002, before her recuperation. This time, too, she will attend events while monitoring her physical condition, but it will be a major step forward.

Ahead of his official visit to Indonesia from Saturday, Japanese Emperor Naruhito on Thursday expressed hope for more exchanges between young people from his country and the Southeast Asian nation.

Japan's Emperor Talks about Forthcoming Trip to Indonesia - The Japan News
[...]

During the press conference, the Emperor reminisced fondly about meeting members of an Indonesian children’s delegation who came to Japan between 1989 and 1997, when he was Crown Prince. The children who visited him at the Crown Prince’s Palace in Tokyo have since grown up and established themselves in such posts as a member of parliament and an assistant professor of a university. “I’m looking forward to seeing them again,” the Emperor said.

The Emperor also touched upon World War II, likely because the former Imperial Japanese Army occupied Indonesia, which was then a Dutch territory. “There were difficult times,” the Emperor said. “It’s important that we never forget the people who died, that we deepen our understanding of the past and that we nurture a love for peace.”

The Emperor also spoke about his impressions of Indonesia, saying, “Islam is the county’s main religion, but people follow various other religions, too, imbuing the country with rich diversity.”

Indonesia has a thriving economy and the largest population among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries. “I believe the country will continue to play an important role in the international community,” the Emperor said.

[...]

“I hope [my wife] will take care of herself in the hot climate and enjoy the visit safely,” the Emperor said.

Press conferences held prior to overseas trips are usually attended by both the Emperor and the Empress, but the Empress opted not to attend on this occasion so as to concentrate on preparations for the trip.

It certainly is packed with events, and Masako seems to be doing very well. I love her smile when she was wearing the fabric, she seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself.

Me too! Very encouraging to see Masako successfully handle a busy schedule. I expect this state visit will be the template for future overseas visits. I was disappointed only the Crown Prince Akishino couple attended the send-off at the airport but that could be the IHA being overly cautious about infection or prioritizing faster departure instead of saying farewells to so many people.

Monday's botanical garden event was not originally planned but I hope the Indonesian side at least notified the Japanese side on Sunday or something. Seems risky to squeeze in an event, no matter how nice a gesture, especially when the IHA has repeatedly stated Masako's condition fluctuates and may remain fatigued after a series of events.

I believe the June 19 cultural viewing with First Lady First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo is Empress Masako's first truly solo event outside the Imperial Palace in years. She's done solo sericulture work at the palace cocoonery and even though Emperor Naruhito was nearby meeting to the President, Masako was with the First Lady for a while. Media have described Masako's attendance at the Japanese Red Cross annual meeting and Florence Nightingale convention as "solo" but other Imperial princesses attended those events.

Later on June 20th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited Darma Persada University and met around 10 students studying Japanese and people who studied in Japan. Masako's participation at the university and vocational high school was a late decision. It was originally planned for Emperor Naruhito to attend afternoon events alone.
