Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko Current Events 1: May 2019 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The IHA has released information following regular checkups in the past although I think Empress Emerita Michiko's breast cancer announcement was also released with reassurances? (i.e. - early-stage, small)

I have been curious about Michiko wearing sunglasses since her cataract surgery and now it makes sense. Hopefully the laser surgery will resolve the issue.

The IHA reports Emperor Naruhito's family expressed sympathies to the Emeritus couple on July 26 following the announcement of their diagnosis and surgery. [NTV]

On July 29th, Emperor Emeritus Akihito went to the biology institute at the Imperial Palace after 10am. He waved to well-wishers while leaving Akasaka Estate and arriving at the palace. He is not visiting the IHA hospital.

Agency officials said his condition is improving since he started taking medication and restricting his fluid intake.

They said the Emperor Emeritus has reduced his activities, such as by shortening his morning and evening walks, but that other restrictions are not necessary.

Agency officials also said the Emperor Emeritus will regularly visit a biological laboratory at the Imperial Palace to continue his research on goby fish.

On August 26th, Empress Emerita Michiko visited the Imperial Household Agency Hospital to follow up on a blood clot in her right calf. She was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (peripheral type) last week. She is not taking medication and under observation, drinking plenty of water and exercising moderately to improve circulation. Deep vein thrombosis was suspected after an earlier blood test.

Empress Emerita Michiko arrived at the IHA hospital around 10am and left shortly after 11:30am.

The Emeritus couple had medical examinations several times in June. Empress Emerita Michiko’s BNP level, a diagnostic indicator of heart failure, has increased and she continues to have slight fever in the afternoon. She continues her daily walks in mornings and evenings with Emperor Emeritus Akihito.

Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko underwent testing at the Imperial Household Hospital on Friday after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis last week.

A clot has been found in a blood vessel in her right calf, an aide to the Empress Emerita said. The doctors will decide on her treatment, including whether medication is needed, based on the result of the screening.

[...]

After last week's diagnosis, the Empress Emerita has been spending her time as usual at the Sento Imperial Residence in Minato Ward in the Japanese capital, such as taking a walk with her husband, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, in the morning and afternoon, taking care to stay hydrated and engaging in light exercise.
Doctors: Empress Emerita does not need medication for now | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News
Following an examination, it was decided that she does not need medication nor other treatment at the moment. Doctors say her thrombosis is a relatively low-risk type in which blood clots form in a vein below the knee. They say they will keep monitoring her conditions.
Wishing the Empress Emerita a smooth recovery.

Japan's former Emperor Akihito turned 89 on Friday, after having spent most of the year peacefully with his wife, former Empress Michiko, while pursuing his life's work on goby fish research, the Imperial Household Agency said.

His condition has improved since receiving treatment for a heart failure diagnosis in July. His daily routine includes taking morning and evening walks with his wife at what is now called the Emperor Emeritus' Residence in the Akasaka Estate.

Outside of visits to the hospital and the Imperial Palace, the coronavirus pandemic has limited the former emperor's outings this year to two special exhibits on the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan from U.S. rule in June, and an exhibit for the late Prince Mikasa in December.

He has reflected on memories of past trips to Britain, expressing gratitude for the friendship he had built with the late Queen Elizabeth II since her coronation in 1953, the agency said.

The Emeritus couple had colds in mid and late December. They have largely recovered and attended New Year public greetings on January 2. They tested negative for influenza and Covid.

An aide said the couple cherishes important New Year events and worked hard to recuperate enough for the public greetings. Empress Emerita Michiko stayed close to her husband during the 3 sessions and did not wave to the crowds.

Probably due to their advanced ages, their recovery from a cold has taken longer than expected and they're still recovering physical strength.

“You did a great job,” Michiko reportedly told the restoration project members when she visited Daishoji temple in Kyoto on May 15.

[...]

“I really appreciate (Michiko’s) generosity and her gratitude to, and interest in, restoration projects, without which this project would not have been possible,” said Monica Bethe, who heads the Kyoto-based Medieval Japanese Studies Institute.

The garment is believed to have been made around 1890 and has been kept since 1909 at the temple, where female members of the imperial family and court nobility lived when they became Buddhist nuns after retirement.

While the gown had long been believed to have been tailored in Europe, the repair work has revealed that the embroidery was made in Japan, according to the institute that led the restoration project.

The couple, particularly Michiko, have supported the work of Barbara Ruch, an American researcher who has been committed to the preservation and restoration of the cultural heritage of imperial convents, according to their aides.

They introduced Ruch’s work to the late painter Ikuo Hirayama, who headed an organization now known as the Foundation for Cultural Heritage and Art Research.
