No she didn't the King decided that she shall wear this. According to me - this splendid tiara which is one of the most historical tiaras in the Bernadotte family was a very good choice.

I love the cameo tiara. I would love to see either one of the princesses wear it at one of their weddings.

I don't think that it was very flattering on Queen Silvia, however. I think that it has to do with the way in which the diademe is worn and the way in which Queen Silvia wore it was not as flattering as it could have been. I also don't think that her wedding gown did her must justice. She is so glamorous that I would have liked to have seen her wear something that suited her personality more. However, as I said before the cameo tiara is quite impressive and gorgeous, IMO.

Princess Birgitta and Princess Desirée also wore the cameo tiara for their weddings and it looked fantastic on Princess Desirée.

Here is Princess Desirée wearing the tiara on her wedding day. She looks absolutely stunning wearing the cameo tiara. I haven't seen many photographs of persons wearing this piece, but Princess Desirée simply looks radiant. I think that her choice of hairdo is also very becoming with the tiara which is really why (IMO) that she wears this piece so well.

I especially like the last one. I don't think we see enough of the King's sisters. (Are they still classed as official members of the Royal Family or are the three that married commoners classed the same as the Counts Bernadotte?)

I have read that prior to his marriage, HM's youngest sister was his official hostess to state visits and major events. (I know she accompanied him on his state visit to Scotland in 1975.) Does anyone have any photographs of this?

And doesn't Lillian look just stunning hovering in the background of that photo. She was such a beautiful woman in her 60s. What an amazing lady she must be.

In that first picture of Princess Desiree's wedding it appears that she is wearing the family lace veil along with a stylish 60's veil as well. What do you all think? Is she wearing two veils?

Jacqueline, I have to agree with you whole-heartedly. I think that Princess Desiree's choice of hairdo accentuated the beauty of this extraordinary tiara. Queen Silvia and Princess Birgitta both wore their hair up, which made the tiara stand out and the focal point, while their faces should have been the focal point and the tiara a lovely and spectacular accessory.

I think that Silvia's dress is lovely, but I don't think it was a good dress for her. I think that Silvia is indeed a beautiful and glamorous woman and her dress should've reflected that. I feel that it covered her up too much.

I´m so sorry Josefine but I think that one of the pictures isn´t from C-G´s and Silvias wedding.

It´s the picture two steps back from this comment. The picture is taken in Slottskyrkan ( the church at the Royal Castle) and they where married in Storkyrkan. And I think that the fourth person at the front road ( to the right of Queen Ingrid of Denmark) is C-G himself. This must be one of his sisters weddings, i don´t know if Princess Christina got married in Slottskyrkan but that is my guess if I look at the clothes and so on...
Sorry, i don´t want to be a "besserwisser"-take this comment the right way please...

– sen fick vi vår Silvia

Det är den 12 mars 1976 och det går en rysning av välbehag genom landets rojalister.
Äntligen satt de där i den gula salongen, i den så kallade förlovningssoffan där kungens fyra systrar satt när de presenterade sina fästmän inför TV-kamerorna.
Och lite här och var så log man när fästmön Silvia log och kungen på frågan om hur det började också log och sa:
- Det sa bara klick! Och sen har det fortsatt att klicka.
Det var i München 1972 det började klicka. Det var olympiska spel och en viss fröken Silvia Sommerlath hade till uppgift att som olympiavärdinna se till att en viss svensk kronprins från Sverige skulle trivas.
Det lyckades hon med till den milda grad att prinsen blev betagen och bad adjutanten ringa upp om en träff.
Och träffen resulterade alltså i ett klick som i sin tur resulterade i en fyra år lång katt och råttalek med pressen.

Vem var flickan?
Redan sommaren 1973 hade en påpasslig fotograf tagit en bild på kungen med en mörk vacker flicka bredvid sig i porschen på Öland.
Men vem var hon?
Det hade gått rykten förstås men ingen visste vem hon var förrän den 12 mars.
Då hade både Silvia och kungen länge tvekat.
Skulle Silvia som var en ”vanlig” flicka klara pressen och anpassa sig till drottningrollen.
Kungen frågade till slut sin farbror prins Bertil som träffat Silvia flera gånger och som omedelbart svarade.
- Om du inte gifter dig med flickan är du ett nöt. Sveriges folk kommer att älska henne.
Så nu satt de där i soffan framför alla reportrar och någon frågade vad Silvia hade som andra flickor saknar.
- Hon är Silvia, svarade kungen.

Sagobröllop
Och Silvia frågade om hon hade någon drottning som förebild och då svarade hon blixtsnabbt.
– Nej, men jag har en kung.
Prins Bertil hade förstås rätt. Svenska folket kapitulerade.
Det blev ett sagobröllop den 19 juni och 180 000 människor kantade gatorna kring kortegen och det var nog inte bara inbitna rojalister som veknade när de såg det unga paret.
Och medan kungen var kungen med svenska folket blev drottningen Silvia. Och nog hade väl republikanerna länge hoppats men nu när kungen hade sin Silvia vid sin sida så vittrade snabbt de republikanska fästningarna och monarkins ställning befästes.
Och idag dryga tjugo år efter det överraskande bröllopet för den republikanska klubben en tynande tillvaro med bara 170 medlemmar.
Så kan det gå när en flicka från folket vinner både kungen och hela kungariket.


Ingen har sett en vackrare stad i ett märkligare land, och det var minst 100 miljoner över hela världen som tittade. Kamerorna var följsamma in i minsta detalj, som hade de programmerats av salig Mått-Johansson, och alla detaljerna var valda med en estetisk urskiljning som helt simpelt måste betecknas som mästerlig. Till och med den klart vedervärdiga Sergelfontänen med sin kuriösa himlastormare i färgat glas gav ett skimmer av ogenomtränglig gåta åt denna den skönaste av huvudstäder. Längre i nationell PR kan man inte komma.
Klart att också hela paraden av hästburna livgardister innanför kyrkan bidrar till att korrigera bilden av ett Sverige som ett land styrt av röda huliganer. Med ett sådant uppbåd av regala grannlåter kan inte ens Förenta staternas republikanska svenskätare - jag hoppas att även de har abonnerat på denna historia - påstå att vi är en vidrig socialistisk diktatur.”
