    August 2008 "Marlborough House Set"

Marlborough House I've got to hurry up too! I am reading Elizabeth 1 by Alison Weir as well so it's going to be hard...I really like Anita Leslie's style, however.

Book Club selections for May-August 2008

Diana Cooper Hello Russophile, I really enjoyed that biography too and I've kept it. She was certainly an amazing woman! I heard an interview with her son a few days ago. Best, Attaining Grace

Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria (1858-1889) and Mayerling

Suicidal tendencies That's awful, Menarue. I feel very sorry for Mary. Apparently she was a very sweet, affectionate girl. I can understand the Prince committing suicide to a certain degree, but I think that he should have done it alone!

Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria (1858-1889) and Mayerling

Mayerling movie: Spoiler This was how it was portrayed in the movie. I must read a good book about this. Does anyone know of one?

Grand Duchesses Xenia (1875-1960) and Olga (1882-1960), sisters of Nicholas II

Once a grand duchess Hi Viv, I started reading this at the library and then went off on a tangent so I'll have to start it again! I've bought it now. Xenia didn't strike me as helpless at all in the first part of the book. I want to buy the book about the Grand Duchesses as well.

King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925)

Books I'd love to know which books they are from, please!

Genealogy of the Royal Family of Denmark

I'm interested in this too, Menarue. I would think that Princess Mary herself is looking into this, surely?

Grand Duchesses Xenia (1875-1960) and Olga (1882-1960), sisters of Nicholas II

Grand Duchess Xenia (Sister of Nicholas II) I am reading a book about the Grand Duchess at the moment. She is a very interesting character. Would anyone like to discuss her?

Books on Current and Recent British Royals

I am very interested in reading this. Unfortunately there are almost 30 holds on it at the library so I may have a long wait!

July 2008: "Princess Masako" by Ben Hills (chapters 1-10)

I am hoping to get this from the library on Monday.

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

I must read the last chapter again. I can't really remember the author's conclusions.

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

How wonderful! It would be so interesting to have a royal princess friend. It must be very difficult to be royal. Princess Mary seems to be coping with it amazingly well, so far. As an Australian, I can imagine to some extent just how much her life has changed. Best, Lisa

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

I don't know whether I agree entirely with that, Menarue. I got the impression that Townsend was the one who really didn't want to get married when he knew that the Princess would have to give up her royal status and money from the Civil List. She was inconsistent about demanding to be...

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

I agree that Princess Margaret's pact not to marry was probably done in the heat of the moment. It does show a side that is self-destructive, I suppose, but I can imagine doing that myself! (It probably says the same thing about me.) It's hard to know if she would have been happier if she'd...

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

Re: Memory I am discussing this from memory too, I'm afraid. I thought that Princess Margaret was the more honourable person in the affair with Townsend. I got the impression that she took the pact that she made with him that neither of them would marry very seriously, and she married Snowdon...

UN Calls for Referendum on Royal Family: April 2008

I agree with all of your posts. I also must say that I don't understand why the UN appears to be so highly regarded by many (mostly left-wingers) when it includes countries with such dreadful abuses of human rights. (Who are they to sneer at Great Britain!!!) It's often spoken about in...

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

I remember from reading the book last year that I actually thought that Peter Townsend and the Princess were 'thrown together' rather a lot, and that it wasn't surprising that they fell in love. He often escorted her to functions, for example. I also agreed that the Princess's behaviour was...

How many Royal books do you own?

I don't have that many because I have got a lot from the library and my fiance actually has a lot! I think that I have read more of his royal books than he has! Like you, Elspeth, I read Jean Plaidy and Georgette Heyer during my teenage years. Jean Plaidy's novels for children actually...

I have read that King George VI was very strict about following rations most of the time at least, but I am sure that the royals had feasts sometimes! Regards, Attaining Grace bookaddiction

Book Club selections for May-August 2008

Sorry Hello Elspeth, I'm sorry about that. I should have looked at the guidelines again before posting. I think that there is a book called Emma: The Viking Queen which might be appropriate. Regards, Lisa

Book Club selections for May-August 2008

I'd like to nominate An Uncommon Woman and The Last Romantic: Queen Marie of Romania by Hannah Pakula. An Uncommon Woman is about Princess Victoria, Queen Victoria's Daughter. Victoria's Daughters would also be a good choice.

June 2008: "Princess Margaret" by Tim Heald

Education I always think that the English seemed to be terrifically old-fashioned in their methods of educating upper-class women. Diana Cooper, for instance, could quote reams of poetry and Shakespeare, but apparently her mathematics was entirely neglected. They were obviously just meant to...

"Frederik - Crown Prince of Denmark" by Gitte Redder & Karin Palshøj (2008)

Prince Frederick I agree, Kerry. We'd certainly love to read it here! I did see some of the pics in the Woman's Day and thought that they were lovely. I will probably buy Mary: Princess of Style while I'm waiting. Best, Lisa bookaddiction

May 2008: "King, Kaiser, Tsar" by Catrine Clay

I am still a bit behind in my reading so I haven't reached the part where George doesn't save the Imperial Russian family. There are many conflicting opinions about this so it will be interesting to see what Clay thinks. I am also interested in reading 'Victoria's Daughters'. Regards...

May 2008: "King, Kaiser, Tsar" by Catrine Clay

Hello LadyCat, I agree with you to some extent although the author states elsewhere that Willy really didn't want war at all and got himself into an impossible situation because he was so tied up with the military. They seemed to be much more warlike than him. It was very strange the way...
