Ingrid Alexandra's Baptism

Why wasn't Princess Ingrid Alexandra christened in the dress made by Princess Ingeborg in 1920 that was worn by all of King Olav's descendants?

I don’t know but she instead wore the older christening gown that King Olav himself wore to his christening at Sandringham in 1903 (and had not been worn again until I A wore it)

Maybe they wanted something special to mark the christening of norways first direct female heir

Hmm, it’s interesting what King Olav would have thought.

I would like to think that despite distancing himself from women over the years, he would have known they could do a perfectly fine job as the sovereign if given a chance — his cousins Elizabeth and Margrethe should have proved that substantially.

Which is all to say I hope his great-granddaughter being baptized in such particular esteem would not have given him another heart attack.

The line of succession was changed on 29 May 1990 when King Olav was still alive, so he must have been aware of the prospect of Norway getting a female monarch at some point down the line.

Interesting detail about the gown. Could it be because Ingrid Alexandra was expressly named for Olav V (born Alexander)?

King Olav V apparently kept silent on the constitutional reform itself, but he did insist to the government that Prince Haakon (who was 16 years of age) should not be displaced by Princess Märtha Louise (then 18).

If this is too off-topic or if anyone wishes to discuss it further, I would be happy to move this comment elsewhere.

That’s a good point, but Princess Ragnhild was Ragnhild Alexandra (although I believe after her great-grandmother?) and not baptized in the gown, nor Harald or Haakon as the heirs.

Perhaps nobody found it until some point between Haakon (or Maud Angelica) and Ingrid?
