The Imperial Household Agency has announced that Princess Kako, younger daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, will be heading to England in the northern fall for a year’s exchange at the University of Leeds. Emperor Akihito Celebrates 83rd Birthday With Record-Breaking Crowd

Japanese Emperor Akihito today celebrates his 83rd birthday, and as is customary, appeared on the balcony of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo with other members of the Imperial Family to greet well-wishers. 33,000 people crowded into the Palace area to catch a glimpse of the monarch, beating the previous most-attended event in 2009 to mark the Emperor’s 20th anniversary on the throne (just over 30,000 people attended that event). Princess Kako Begins At New University

The younger daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko began her studies at the International Christian University today. Princess Kako posed for photographers during a brief photo session in the University’s grounds prior to attending the official welcoming ceremony for new students in Mikata, Tokyo. Princess Kako Visits Imperial Burial Ground

Japan’s Princess Kako today paid her respects to her ancestors with a visit to the Musashi Imperial Graveyard in Hachiōji. The graveyard is the mausoleum complex which contains the final resting places of the Princess’s great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents: Emperor Hirohito and Empress Kōjun, and Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei. A former classmate of Princess Kako at Gakushuin Primary School apparently posted an unauthorized photograph of the princess in a diary on the member-based social networking site Mixi.
