On This Day: Interment of the Assassinated Archduke
The assassinated heir to the Austrian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie were interred into the crypt at Artstetten Castle on July 4, 1914. Following their deaths in Sarajevo on June 28, the Austrian Imperial Court arranged for the couple’s bodies to be transported by the battleship SMS Viribus Unitis to Trieste, Italy on June 30, before their final journey to Vienna was undertaken by train.
