Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Jaber, Emir of Kuwait since 2020, died at the age of 86 on December 16, 2023. The small state in the Persian Gulf announced the death of its head of state this Saturday, after several days of speculation regarding the health of the sovereign.

Sheikh Nawaf had been admitted to hospital in November following an emergency health issue. The 86-year-old’s condition was stable at the time.

Sheikh Nawaf was defence minister in 1990, during the Gulf War with Iraq. He later also served in other government positions including Interior Minister and Minister of Social Affairs.

He was named Crown Prince in 2006 – a position he held for 14 years. He was sworn in as Emir in September 2020, following the death of Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Kuwaiti government announced Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, 83, as the new Emir of Kuwait on Saturday.
