The Princess of Asturias Swears Allegiance to the Spanish Constitution and Receives the Collar of the Order of Carlos III

Today, Tuesday October 31, Her Royal Highness Princess Leonor, the Princess of Asturias, swore allegiance to the Spanish Constitution to mark her 18th birthday.
At the ceremony, held at the Cortes Generales, the Spanish Parliament, the Princess was accompanied by her parents, Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia and her sister, the Infanta Sofia.
Upon the arrival at the Spanish Parliament, the Royals were greeted by the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, and the President of the Senate, Pedro Rollán and other members of the government.
Then, the session of the Cortes Generales was opened and the Princess swore allegiance to the Spanish Constitution. At the end of the ceremony the national Anthem was played.
Afterwards the King, the Queen, The Princess and the Infanta signed the Book of Honor and greeted the representatives of the high institutions of the State that attended the ceremony.
Following the swearing in ceremony the Royals moved to the Royal Palace where the King presented the Princess of Asturias with the Collar of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III, the highest civil honor granted by the Kingdom of Spain.
During the ceremony the King and the Princess gave a speech. The Princess thanked the representatives of the institutions and stated that with the swearing in ceremony she “solemnly, formally and publicly committed myself to our democratic principles and our constitutional values, which I fully assume”. The Princess also said that she took “an oath of fidelity to the King. Not only to his person, but also to what the Crown symbolizes and represents: the unity and permanence of Spain”.
The King in his speech stated that: “The oath of the Constitution of the Princess of Asturias before the Cortes Generales is the solemn expression of the commitment of the person who embodies the continuity of our Parliamentary Monarchy with our democratic principles and constitutional values”. The King also remembered his own allegiance to the Spanish Constitution in 1986. To her daughter the King said that: “You will not be alone on your path. In your family you will find the necessary more personal support”, adding also that: “democracy and freedom are not built overnight, but day after day; and they require continuous care and permanent improvement. You will have that responsibility: to continue building Spain, adapting it to a world in full transformation”.
Then took place a lunch for the representatives of the institutions and other guests.
In the evening the Princess celebrated her birthday with a private dinner at El Pardo. Among the present were King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Infanta Elena with his son, Felipe de Marichalar and Infanta Cristina with her children, Miguel and Irene Urdangarin and members of the Greek, Bulgarian and Two-Sicilies Royal Families.
