Dutch King and Queen Begin State Visit to South Africa

At the invitation of the President of the South African Republic, Cyril Ramaphosa, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima started today, Wednesday October 18, a three-day state visit to South Africa.
Upon the arrival in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital, the King and the Queen were greeted by South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor.
Then the Royal Couple paid a visit to the Blesbokspruit Wetland Reserve to be informed about the Dutch-South African partnerships in the water sector and to discuss on water quality and water availability in South Africa. They also met with local stakeholders.
The following visit was at the Apartheid Museum, “the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa” opened in 2001. The King and the Queen toured the museum which shows the apartheid past in the country and were reunited with judges, activists and artists to talk about “legal equality and access to justice, especially for the protection of LGBTIQ+ and women’s rights”.
Afterwards the Royal Couple attended a meeting at the Innovation Village along with the Dutch ecomic delegation and their local partners. The meeting was focused on “the connection between education and the labor market, equal opportunities and the importance of vocational education for the green sectors”.
The first day ended with a reception for the Dutch community living in South Africa.
