King Harald Opens Parliament

In Oslo, King Harald of Norway opened the 168th parliamentary session with the traditional speech from the throne. Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon accompanied him. The Crown Princess was absent de to ill health. In accordance with the constitution of 1814 the King is required to open parliament each autumn.

The speech is written by the Government rather than the King himself, and the King was handed the speech by the Prime Minister during the ceremony. In the Speech from the Throne, the King reads out the plans for the Government’s policies in the coming year.
