Prinsjesdag 2023

Today, Tuesday September 19, the Dutch Royal Family has celebrated the traditional opening of Parliament, Prinsjesdag. King Willem-Alexander was joined by his wife, Queen Máxima, Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, Prince Constantijn and his sister-in-law, Princess Laurentien. This year’s Prinsjesdag was marked by the debut of Princess Alexia who was present at the event for the first time. 
Due to the renovation of the Binnenhof, the usual location of the event, Prinsjesdad took place in the Koninklijke Schouwburg, a theater in the city center of The Hague.
The King and the Queen, along with the Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, arrived at the Koninklijke Schouwburg at around 13:15.
Princess Beatrix saw the procession of the carriages from the window of the Council of State.
King Willem-Alexander started his speech by reflecting over his tenth years as King, remembering sad moment, such as the Coronavirus period, but also “the hundreds of heart-warming visits I was able to make throughout the Kingdom”. The King stated that the Netherlands “continue working on equality of opportunity, social security and prospects”, even if “There is still discrimination and racist exclusion in society”.
Talking about the Dutch economy the King said that “To prevent families with the lowest incomes from lagging behind in purchasing power in 2024, the housing allowance will increase. To combat child poverty, the child-related budget will be increased”.
The King also talked about the current situation in Ukraine saying that “The Dutch government, in close cooperation with EU and NATO allies, continues to do everything possible to ensure that Russian aggression stops and Ukrainians can live in peace and freedom again”. He also stressed the importance of “Maintaining democracy”.
At around 14:00, the Dutch Royal Family left the Koninklijke Schouwburg heading back to the Noordeinde Palace where the traditional balcony appearance took place.
Queen Maxima wore apricot trousers and blouse matched with a silk coat with hand-painted flowers by Claes Iversen and a floral headpiece.
The Princess of Orange wore a cobalt blue “asymmetric gathered stretch-crepe gown” by Safiyaa matched with a hat by Fabienne Delvigne. Princess Alexia wore a pink cape gown by Zhivago matched with a hair decoration by Jan Taminiau. Princess Laurentien wore a green gown by Hardies matched with a fascinator.
