Queen Máxima in Brazil: June 4-7

As a special advocate of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for inclusive finance for development, Queen Máxima arrived in Brazil on Sunday June 4 for a three-day visit.
Queen Maxima started the first day in Brazil, in São Paulo, on Monday June 5, with several business meetings. The first one took place at the hedquarter of Santander bank where the Queen roundtable meeting along with representatives of public and private sector and members of Banco Central do Brasil. Topic of the meeting were the promotion of financial inclusion, financial health and inclusive green finance. The following visit was at the headquarter of PicPay, a Brazilian payment app “offering a range of services from credit cards and a digital wallet to P2P payments, e-commerce and social networking”. Queen Maxima met with PicPay executive team to be informed about “their approach to financial health”.
The first day ended with field visits in some businesses. The Queen paid a visit to the headquarter of Kovi, Brazil’s leading car purchase and rental startup. The company aims to “make it easier for groups that are traditionally excluded from or underserved by the formal financial system to access a loan for a car”. Then the Queen visited two restaurants “Barraca da Lu Lu” and “Make Hommus Not War”. There she met with the owners to be informed about how the digital platform for financial products, Dinie, helps them with their work.
On Tuesday June 6, the Queen started the second day in Brazil with a roundtable meeting focused on Brazil’s inclusive digital financial ecosystem and digital infrastructure”.
Then the Queen met with Cristina Junqueira, cofounder of Nubank, “the largest digital financial services platforms in the world”
In the afternoon Queen Maxima moved to Brasilia, the capital, where she had a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, at the presence of several Brazilian Ministers. The meeting was focused on financial inclusion and financial health. Following the meeting the Queen and Minister Haddad held a press conference.
On Wednesday June 7, Queen Maxima started the last day of the working visit to Brazil by visiting an elementary school in Brasilia accompanied by Roberto Campos Neto, Governor of Banco Central do Brasil, and other members of the bank. In this school the students are involved in a financial education program, Aprender Valor, that aims to “brings financial education to students in Brazilian public elementary schools”. Queen Maxima met with the students to talk about the program.
The last event of the visit was a meeting with Governor Campos Neto and other members of Banco Central do Brasil.
