Belgian State Visit to South Africa: Day Two – Johannesburg

The second day of the state visit started today, Friday March 24, in Johannesburg with a separate agenda for Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde.
The King went to the Gauteng Industrial Development Zone (GIDZ) to visit a new hub of the South African diamond industry. During the visit the King attended a meeting focused on opportunities in the diamond sector for young people and women and the export of diamonds.
Queen Mathilde, in the meantime, accompanied by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, paid a visit to the Emuseni Day Care Centre in Orlando West, Soweto. The Queen met with teachers and students and took part in a reading activities for children.
Then the King and the Queen were reunited to visit the Hector Pieterson Museum. This museum is dedicated to “a 12-year-old student who died during the protests when police opened fire on the demonstrators”. The Royal Couple laid a wreath at the memorial.
Afterwards the Royal Couple visited the Skateistan skateboarding school. This school aims to “provide a place of inclusion and learning for underprivileged children in Johannesburg, through skateboarding”.
During the visit the King attended a skate demonstration given by the students.
Later the Royal Couple paid a visit to the headquarter of BEKA Schréder, South-Africa’s leading manufacturer of luminaires that aims “to provide the right lighting solutions by optimising the optical and mechanical design of luminaires” developing “sustainable lighting solutions that should reduce energy consumption and increase safety on the streets”
The second day ended with a jazz concert hosted by the King and the Queen in honor of South African President Ramaphosa.
