Official Visit to the Dutch Caribbean: Sint Maarten – Last Day

Today, Tuesday February 7, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and the Princess of Orange started the second and last day in Sint Maarten by visiting Fort Amsterdam, a historic fort located on the island. During the visit, accompanied by various experts and guides, they went on a birding expedition in search of the brown pelican and then were informed about history of the fort and the wildlife on the island.
Later the Royal Couple and the Princess paid a visit to the White Yellow Cross Care Foundation, a residential home that “provides client centered quality care in a warm and safe environment to all Sint Maarten residents in need of our services”.
Then at the Sint Maarten Science Fair Foundation (SMSFF) the King, the Queen and the Princess attended a presentation organized by primary and secondary school students about their solutions to the plastic waste problem on the island.
In the afternoon the Royal Couple and the Princess visited the Resources 4 Community Resilience (R4CR), a project funded by the World Bank Trust Fund for St Maarten “to provide assistance to the island after the devastating hurricane Irma in 2017”.
Later the King, the Queen and the Princess visited a school to be informed about a school garden project and to talk about the importance of gardening for the mental health.
The following visit was at the Emilio Wilson Park where the Royal Couple and the Princess met with some students and planted with them the yellow sage, the island’s national flower.
Afterwards the King, the Queen and the Princess visited the Sint Peter Hill mountain where they were informed about the nature conservation on Sint Maarten.
In late afternoon the Royal Couple and the Princess attended a youth baseball match and in the evening took place a reception hosted by the governor.
