Queen Máxima Begins Working Visit to United States

On  Tuesday September 6, Her Majesty Queen Máxima started a four-day working visit to the United States accompanied by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Liesje Schreinemacher, Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, Ernst Kuipers, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Minister of Economic Affairs, Communication and Sustainable Development of Aruba, Geoffrey Wever, Minister of Public Health and Tourism of Aruba Dangui Oduber and State Secretary of Infrastructure and Water Management, Vivianne Heijnen. His Majesty Willem-Alexander, on medical advice, had to pull out his partecipation because he is ecovering from pneumonia.
Queen Maxima started the working visit in San Fancisco, California, where she was recieved at the City Hall by the Mayor, London Breed. Then, along with the Mayor, the Queen paid a visit to the gay district “Castro Street” where she met with the LGBTQ+ community and with people who are dedicated to equal rights for LGBTQ+ people and also she visited the GLBT Historical Society Museum that “collects, preserves, exhibits and makes accessible to the public materials and knowledge to support and promote understanding of LGBTQ history, culture and arts in all their diversity”.
Afterwards Queen Maxima attended a seminar titled “Urban Challenges” and focused on “the ever-increasing urbanization and the common challenges of the Netherlands and California in the field of health, mobility and sustainability”. Following the seminar, the Queen was present at the signing of memorandum of understanding between California and the Netherlands focused on climate and circular economy.
In the afternoon Queen Maxima moved to the University of California in San Francisco to addend a seminar focused on “Digital Health” during which she was informed about Dutch innovations and Dutch-American collaboration initiatives in the field of health sciences.
Then, at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Queen took part in a roundtable discussion about climate and circular economy along with American and Dutch CEOs.
The first day ended with an evening reception held at the San Francisco City Hall. Queen Maxima, during a speech, expressed her pleasure to be in San Francisco, and she also stated that the Netherlands and California are “soulmates” and she praised” the attitude of the Californian people: not idly waiting for circumstances to force you into action, but taking matters into your own hands”.
