Dutch Royals attend Remembrance and Liberation Day
Members of the Dutch Royal Family took part, on May 4 and 5, in the commemorations to mark Remembrance and Liberation Day.
Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, on Wednesday May 4th, Remembrance Day, attended a memorial service at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam to commemorate the victims of the Second World War along with the Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Then, in the presence of members of the government, took place the wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument in the Dam Square in memory of those who died during the World War II. Two minutes of silence were observed.
The same day, Princess Margriet, in Rotterdam, attended the commemoration held at National Merchant Marine Monument “De Boeg” for the sailors who died in Rotterdam during the Second World War. The Princess laid a wreath. In the evening the Princess, Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven and Prince Pieter-Christiaan, were in Rhenen to attend the commemorative military ceremony at the military field of honour for professional soldiers and conscripts who have fallen for the Kingdom since 1940.
On Thursday May 5th, Liberation Day, Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven was in Wageningen to attend the traditional Liberation Defile to mark the National Capitulation of 1945.
In the evening King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, together with the Prime Minister Mark Rutte, were present at the traditional Liberation Day Concert on the Amstel River that close the celebrations of the National Liberation.
