The Dutch Royal Family has celebrated Koningsdag 2022, the celebration of the monarch’s birthday, in Maastricht, in the province of Limburg.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima and their three daughters Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, were joined by Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, Prince Maurits and Princess Marilène, Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette, Prince Floris and Princess Aimée.
Upon the arrival at the Sint Servaasbrug, a stone bridge that crosses the Meuse River, the Royals were greeted by Annemarie Penn-te Strake, Mayor of Maastricht and Emile Roemer, King’s Commissioner of Limburg.
Around 23,000 people were present in the city center to participate in the festivities. During the two hours of the visit the Royal Family walked through the city center participating in the activities organized for the event including sports, music, dancing and culture. They started in the area of the “Limburg life”, focused on “its wide diversity: from cycling and hiking through the hilly landscape”. In the “Student life” the Royals attended a music and dance performance held by international students. During the visit at the “European life” area, created to mark the 30th anniversary of the Maastricht treaty, were mint the first two commemorative coins for the treaty. In the “Burgundian life” area, the Royals made some dishes. There was also time for some music: first there was a dj set with the DJs Lucas and Steve and a group of dancers that performed a choreography and then, at the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square in the historic center, took place a concert held by the Dutch violinist, conductor and composer André Rieu. Then the Royals attended the performances of many carnival associations in the “Cultural life” area.
At the end of the festivities, the Royal Family attended the performances of the Rowwen Hèze band.
