Royal Tour of The Caribbean: Jamaica – Day One
Tuesday March 22, the Duke and Duchess departed Belize from Philip S. W Goldson International Airport heading to Jamaica, second stop of their Platinum Jubilee Tour of the Caribbean.
Upon the arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, the Royal couple was greeted by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson-Smith, Lisa Hanna, Member of the Parliament and the Rear Admiral Antonette Wemess Gorman, Chief of the Defence Staff.
The Duke inspected the guard of honour and the anthems were played.
Then the Royal couple was officially received by Governor-General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Linton Allen and his wife Patricia Allen at King’s House. During the meeting the Duke, on behalf of his grandmother the Queen, handed out Jubilee medals to the heads of the various emergency services and to the chief medical officer.
Later the Duke and the Duchess moved to the Trench Town, Bob Marley’s neighbourhood, where they were greeted by Babsy Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and Mark Golding, Opposition Leader of Jamaica.
In Trench Town the Royal couple met with the Jamaica National bobsleigh team, then the Duke played football with England football player Raheem Sterling, Aston Villa and Jamaica winger Leon Bailey, and some Jamaican league football players.
Afterwards the Duke and the Duchess paid a visit to the Trench Town Culture Yard Museum, former home of reggae icon Bob Marley and now turned into “a small museum which presents the phenomenal history of Trench Town along with articles, instruments and furnishing used by Tata Ford, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer”.
Upon the arrival the Royal couple greeted the people gatheret outside to meet them, then they toured the Museum, signed the guest book and also played the drums along with Jamaican musicists.
