Russia holds first imperial wedding in century
Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia has tied the knot with his Italian bride Victoria Romanovna -formerly Nobile Rebecca Bettarini – in Saint Petersburg today. This makes it the first royal wedding to take place on Russian soil since the time of the Tsars, more than a century ago.The Russian Orthodox wedding ceremony took place at Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg.
Among the hundreds of guests were King Simeon II and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria, the dowager Princess of Turnovo and her son Prince Boris of Bulgaria. From Portugal came the Duke and Duchess of Bragança and their two eldest children. Other guests were Crown Prince Leka and princess Elia of Albania, the Prince of Venice, the Duke of Aosta, the Duke of Anjou and his wife the Duchess of Cadaval, Archduke Maximilian, Prince David Bagration.
The groom’s mother was also Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia. She is the self-proclaimed heir to the Russian throne. The groom’s father, Prince Franz Wilhelm of Prussia was reportedly absent due to health issues.
