On Wednesday evening, June 9, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, along with King Albert and Queen Paola, were present in the Royal Box at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts for the final concert of this year’s Queen Elisabeth Music Competition.
At the concert, conducted by Stéphane Denève of the Brussels Philharmonic, performed the top three laureates of this competition, this year held for pianists. This year the first prize went to Jonathan Fournel from France; Sergei Redkin from Russia came second while the third prize went to Keigo Mukawa from Japan.
The music competition was started in 1937 by the great-grandmother of King Philippe, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, in memory of her good friend Eugène Ysaÿe, a Belgian concert-violinist. In 1951 the competition was renamed Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in honour of Queen Elisabeth.
Since 2014 Queen Mathilde is patron of the competition.
