Royals Remember VJ Day with Commemoration Service

On August 15, Prince Charles and various members of the British Royal Family commemorated the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, which also marks the official end of the Second World War.

Prince Philip appeared in a photo montage of VJ Day veterans, as he was onboard HMS Whelp at the time of the Japanese surrender and also served in the Far East. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall held a two minutes silence for the victims of the war against Japan at the National Arboretum in Arewas. They laid poppy wreaths by the memorial to remember those who had died as a result of the war.

The Duke of Cambridge gave an address via pre-recorded video, saying how his grandfather “remembers vividly” his role of liberating the prisoners of war in the Japanese camps.

On video, other royals joined in with the events, with the Duke of Gloucester reading an extract from King George VI’s VJ Day speech as part of an online service headed by Leicester Cathedral.
