Dutch King and Queen Mark Remembrance Day
Yesterday, Monday May 4th, Remembrance Day, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attended the national commemoration held at the Dam Square where took place the wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument at the presence of Prime Minister Rutte, the Mayor of Amsterdam Halsema and President of the National Committee Verbeet.
Following the Coronavirus outbreak the commemoration at the Dam Square was without the public.
In his speech the King said that “It feels strange on an almost empty Dam”, adding that “In these exceptional months, we have all had to give up some of our freedom. Our country has not known anything like it since the war”. King Willem-Alexander also remembered “all civilians and soldiers who fought for our freedom”.
