Queen delivers first Easter speech

For the first time in her 68 year reign, the Queen addressed Britain with an Easter speech as the country is entering the first extended week of lockdown on Monday.

A week earlier, the Queen addressed the nation in an emergency speech surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, which has now killed a total of 9,875 Britons.

The Queen made it clear in her message that “this year, Easter will be different for many of us, but by keeping apart we keep others safe. But Easter isn’t cancelled; indeed, we need Easter as much as ever”.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, will also deliver an Easter address via video message, like many other vicars across the country. Due to the warm weather over Easter weekend, the police have warned people not to break social distancing rules. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said it is not clear when the lockdown will end, as the original three week period has been extended due to a vast rise in deaths.
