Crown Princess Letizia: Five Years, Five Classic Outfits

Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary on the 21st May. The Princess has worn some classic outfits and to mark the couple’s anniversary we have gathered five of her most famous outfits.

The Armani engagement trouser suit – 6th November 2003

Few royal watchers will forget Felipe and Letizia’s engagement as she controversially wore an Giorgio Armani white trouser suit accessorised with black pumps. image Even today fashion watchers still comment on the bold choice of Letizia not only for choosing a foreign designer but also for wearing such a simple trouser-suit. image Since the couple’s engagement, Letizia has worn a number of different white trouser suits with great success.

Lorenzo Caprile’s Danish wedding outfit – 14th May 2004

This is the outfit that probably is most instantly recognised with Letizia. Caprile’s masterpiece of a scarlet dress with matching bolero made headlines arcoss the world. image Part of the success of the dress was the simplicity of the design and Letizia added to the effect by borrowing two Art Deco ruby and diamond clips and a pair of earrings from her future mother-in-law Queen Sofia. image The dress has never been worn again and many would argue this was Letizia’s best outfit by far.
(Caprile also designed the figure-hugging red skirt with the vibrant off-the-shoulder jacket that she had worn at pre-wedding concert in Denmark on the 13th May. image )

Felipe Varela’s dusty pink maternity outfit for the Prince of Asturias Awards – 20th October 2006

At the Prince of Asturias Awards in October 2006, Letizia was in the early stages of her pregnancy with Sofia and was only able to attend the award ceremony. She chose Felipe Varela to create a dusty pink wool coat with a matching chiffon dress. image The coat’s design had sequins through the wool whilst the dress had an embroidered hem. image The outfit was simply stunning and Letizia combined the look with a pair of Pedro Garcia shoes and a plum coloured velvet bag. Jewellery was kept to a minimum with her favourite pair of diamond and pearl earrings. image

Felipe Varela’s green shift dress – Fashion Fair 17th July 2008 and China 8th August 2009

Letizia won praise when she attended the opening of Madrid’s fashion fair in July 2008 wearing a striking emerald green shift dress. image She wore the dress with a pair of snakeskin platform peep-toe shoes by Pura Lopez. image Varela has used this winning design to make many other shift dresses for the Princess in a number of colours. Shortly after wearing this dress, Letizia was included in Vanity Fair’s international best dressed list.

This dress has received a huge amount of press coverage in recent weeks since Letizia wore it to welcome President Sarakozy and Carla Bruni on their state visit. The international press hailed Letizia as a ‘style Queen’ claiming that she had beaten Carla Bruin in the style stakes. However, the French visit in April was in fact the thrid appearance of the dress as Letizia had first worn it back in February at an art museum and then later during the US tour. image The figure-hugging raspberry layered dress by Varela with high neckline and bracelet length sleeves suits Letizia’s petite frame. image The dress is worn with a pair of rose platforms by Magrit. image
