Belgian King and Queen Begin State Visit to Luxembourg
At the invitation of Their Royal Highnesses, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde started today, Tuesday October 15, a three-day state visit to Luxembourg.
The Royal Couple arrived in Luxembourg by train and was welcomed at the Luxembourg Central Station by Grand Duke Henri. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa won’t be present during the state visit because she is recovering from a knee surgery.
Then, at the Grand Ducal Palace took place the official welcoming ceremony. King Willem-Alexander and Grand Duke Henri inspected the guard of honour and the national anthems were played. Inside the palace the King, the Queen and the Grand Duke posed for the official official photo followed by a private meeting and then met with Grand Duchess.
Afterwards the Royal Couple paid a visit to the Monument de la Solidarité Nationale, the national war memorial of Luxembourg built to commemorate the victims of the World War II, where they laid a wreath.
In the afternoon the King and the Queen, along with the Grand Duke, took a walk along the Corniche Road. Later at the Town Hall the Royal Couple and the Grand Duke Henri were welcomed by Mrs. Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg and then attended an accademic session followed by a reception. The King and the Queen signed the Golden Book.
In the evening the Grand Duke hosted a state banquet at the palace. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie were present as well. Also the Grand Duchess, despite the recent surgery, was present.
In the speech the King thanked Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa for “for the numerous expressions of attention that we have been able to experience since our arrival this afternoon” and then he remembered “Grand Duke Jean, who left us barely six months ago, and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, my father’s older sister”. The King also stated that “Luxembourg and Belgium have been part of the same major political units for more than a thousand years”.
