Queen Maxima in Bangladesh: July 9-11

As a special advocate of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for inclusive finance for development and at the invitation of the government, Queen Máxima arrived in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh on Tuesday evening July 9 for a three-day visit. At her arrival the Queen was welcomed by Abdul Momen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh.
Queen Maxima started the first day of the visit, on Wednesday July 10, with several meetings at the local UN office organized by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the presence of development partners and representatives of the fintech sector.
Afterwards the Queen went on field visit.
The first one was at Access to Information, a special programme of the Goverment of Bangladesh that aims “to ensure easy, affordable and reliable access to quality public services for all citizens of Bangladesh”. Then the Queen paid a visit to ShopUp, a fintech company that helps via Facebook “micro-entrepreneurs to sell with better organization and provide access to affordable financing”.
Queen Maxima also visited the textile company Jhanra Fabrics owned by the businesswoman Jharna Islam who, in 1998, set up a tailoring business with a small microfinance loan from BRAC Microfinance.
Later Queen Maxima was received by Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, at Gana Bhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister.
During the meeting the Queen expressed her appreciation for the growth of mobile phone use in Bangladesh and the country’s huge success in women empowerment.
Queen Maxima started the third and last day of the visit, on Thuesday July 11, with a round table meeting with private sector representatives about digital financial inclusion.
Then the Queen met with the Governor of the Bangladesh Bank, Fazle Kabir, the Minister of Post and Telecommunication, Mustafa Jabbar, and a delegation from the Ministry of Finance.
Afterwards Queen Maxima was received by Mohammad Abdul Hamid, President of Bangladesh at the Bangabhaban, the official residence.
